The M16A4 and M4 are replacing the M16A2. My old unit, a Reserve LAR company received both, the M16A4 for the scouts and the M4 for the crewmen. I believe the A4 also has a heavier barrel than the A2.

Replacement weapons for the M9 have not been received as far as I know.

The USMC fire resistant organization gear (FROG!), looks a lot like the desert MARPAT when geared up, but the blouse's torso is uniformly tan and without pockets.

You can try some of the websites that sell surplus gear. But be prepared to pay a lot of money for one as they're not "surplus" yet.

USMC dress uniform or battle dress? Why would you want either one?

Where did you get these pics? Are you sure they are Marines?

JCT might have a better handle on this but the only thing I can think of that looks close is the LAV scout jumpsuit. Could be some LAR Marines on patrol without the LAVs.

Those are definitely Marines. Marine Body Armor, MARPAT cammo on the helmets, and the trucks have the Marine turrets and antennas.

Doesn't the 20-inch barrel exploit the fragmenting tendencies of 5.56 better than the 14.5 inch via higher velocity?

Well, generally, yes, you will get higher muzzle velocity and improved accuracy from a longer barrel. Since the round has to be above a certain fps to fragment, you get a greater distance at which this can take place. Of course, like anything, the design of a battle rifle/carbine involves trade-offs in these regards. It's far easier to move an M4 with a collapsed buttstock and shorter barrel around vehicles and inside confined spaces. It's also a bit nicer to jump with and carry as a dismount. Meanwhile, the difference in performance for an average shooter may not be enough to justify keeping the longer barrel for many parts of the Army, particularly when most of your engagements are happening at under 200 meters.

Gun Grape,
Around the summer of '06 the Marines in Iraq were issued nomex flightsuit-style uniforms. They were intended for grunts and other Marines who were on the road a lot and subject to flash burns from IEDs. So you will see a lot of pictures of Marines from that time period in tan 'coveralls'. I'm not sure exactly when the FROG gear came out, but it should be replacing all of the nomex flightsuits. When a Marine is geared up, it will probably be pretty tough to tell if he is in the new uniform or simply in the desert MARPAT utilities.
