Good, you'll be on oxygen soon. But remember Saint Blues, promotion does not guarantee job satisfaction, especially if it would take you away from the job you love and consign you to endless paperwork.

The big fish in the big pond, eh? In the Army Air Corps most WO 1s gained a commission, but I've heard a number of them say they regretted the move. Quite a few resigned as early as they could and headed for civilian life.

Oh, well I know it. I think the key is finding the right paperpushing job once you've passed a certian rank. 'Cause some of them, not so bad either.

Maybe, but they are likely to be few and far between, in which case the timing is crucial. The dread term in the British forces generally was "Exigencies of the Service" which meant tough luck, you're going and that's that!

The equivalent term in my line is "Needs of the Air Force". It means the same thing.

I'm hoping someday to save a General's family member's life, or something, thus opening the door to one of those cush paper-work jobs!

Unfortunately, for all his devious-ness, he runs in rather different circles than I do!

Talking about Generals, are there many, if any, female Generals in the top front line spots, or are they all "male" orientated?

I'm not sure what you mean by front line, but there are quite a few female flag rank officers, in all five services, including the Coast Guard.

You are right there Glyn and I did apply but at a bad time - Options for Change (1992) had kicked in and there were very few vacancies for Reg C(LE) officers so civvy street it was for me. That said, I am glad I ventured into the civvy jungle at age 40 as it has allowed me to take up another career whereas a friend of mine who served 40 years (Junior Leader to Major via the Sgts' Mess) retired last year at age 55 and now finds himself unemployable, although a £20K per year pension helps him to keep his head above water.

As far as "front lines" are concerned, all combat arms branches (Infantry, Field Artillery, etc.) are male oriented. Though in my state (National Guard, PA), the Adjutant General of Pennsylvania (2-star MG) is a female who's roots are in aviation. There are plenty more female General Officers in the higher eschelons, absolutely.

I am a Staff Sergeant/E-6, have been in for 7 years, and served the last 3 on Active Duty in support of OEF and OIF (12 months in each.) Currently in a Financial Management Company.

    Welcome aboard, warrior.

Stop on by the 'Intro' forum, and repeat all of the above, adding any detail you think we'd like to know about you.

What MOS? And thanks for doing your bit; we appreciate it.

    Bluesman...

Thanks, and I will stop by the intro forum.

I'm a 44C30... was a disbursing officer in OIF, and Operations NCO in OEF. The former with the 125th FMC out of Hawaii and the later with the 208th out of Manheim, Germany.

Dammit, for a sec I thought you were quoting your breast size. Glad to make the introduction, albiet in an awkward way.
