When I was a company commander in the 1980s, my First Sergeant was the only combat veteran in the company. He had earned a Distinguishd Service Cross in Viet Nam as an M-60 gunner. He was awarded the DSC for his action in helping his platoon out of an ambush. The citation stated he kept moving from cover to cover and providing suppressing fire with his M-60. He told me he wasn't surpressing a thing and that the VC kept blowing away what cover he had so he had to move.
One of our platoon leaders was a little, shall we say, quirky. Good kid, good leader, Academy graduate, knew his stuff, well respected by his platoon. But his taste in music was bizarre and his civilian clothes were well into the punk realm. And everyone once in awhile he would just say something that was totally off the wall. After one of those discussions among the company officers and senior NCOs, said officer said something really bizarre. With that the meeting broke up. As they all walked away my first sergeant looked at the back of the retreating LT and said "You know, Sir, there is an entirely different band playing in that boy's head." Couldn't have said it better myself. Oh, and as for the "Don't Call Me Sir...I work For a Living!" deal...my standard rejoinder to that was "Don't call me Sergeant...I THINK for a Living!"

Proper Lineage
That's one for the navy.
As a young FDO I returned to my M-577 fire direction vehicle once after meeting the battery commander elsewhere. Upon arriving at the vehicle, I noticed that the ramp was up and the back door closed. While an immense ruckus ensued within, the battery "top", a short, stout African-American with 21 years in stood guard outside. "Sir, you don't want to go in there." "Top, I got targets to shoot". "Lieutenant, nothing is gonna get shot in this battery without my say-so." My daddy always said that when a senior NCO goes from "sir" to "Lieutenant", he's just shot across your bow. BEWARE. "Until your chief computer (E-5 13C20) gets done beating some sense into your new FDNCO chief (E-5 MOS transfer from dentistry-that's right, DENTISTRY ), NCO business be rulin' the day here!"It took about three more minutes and the medic. Needless to say, I wasn't there when the unfortunate exited the track. He was GONE in two days.
