How would Russia react to a Israeli-USA preemptive strike on Iran??

Ariel Sharon's reelection is on the 29th of January 2006. There are querries that he will launch a pre emptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities for two reasons:

1 To protect the national security of Israel.
2 To gain internal supports from his own party. In the past Sharon has struggled with this and a pre emptive strike may be the only way to gather their confidence. It is highly likely that Israel will rally behind Sharon with the Iranian issue and therefore be reelected.

Over the past few weeks i have read numerous news reels that Russia has apparently warned against military intervention in Iran. Since Russia is Iran's leading military supplier, what would Russia's response be to an Israeli-US lead pre emptive strike on the countries nuclear facilities.

Im predicting just fundind Iran with massive amounts of weapons if a time like this comes. any theories?

Also would the Islamic world jump behind and support Iran or is it all just hype. If yes/ could all the Islamic states that would support Iran form together a large enough alliance to drive the USA back out of the country?

Where do I start! I shall attempt to confine myself to the issue of nukes.

    "Since Russia is etc." Nope.

Pakistan, yes. China, yes (via Pakistan) but in delicate balance due to a new pipeline.

The south of Iran is on the edge of active rebelion.

The Iranian Gov. is desperately unstable.

The "rest of the Islamic World" is an issue that at least (God help) Fox News brings up: Sunni vs. Shia. Let alone Wahabbi or other sects.

Russia? Well, let us see. Ooops! They have made their cash. Do they want China to make an oil deal with Iran or them? China needs power. China buys toys from Russ.

    Do the sums.

Russian government: "Oh wow. Guess Iran should have made a different play. Oh well, put it on the agenda to complain about that at the next UN meeting..."

They'd sit back and watch to see how well their missile defence systems worked.

    Russia would smile

Oil prices would skyrocket for a time, putting loads of additional money in Russian pockets (thanks to Russian oil sales) in return for zero expenditure of money or effort.

I'm doubtful of a "skyrocket", as it is unlikely the Iranians would stop selling their oil because a nuke plant disappeared. They would still need the money.

Question...Who cares how they react, they sell Iran its weapons while Iran hides their ambitions over a nuclear arsenal from the rest of the world while they threaten their neighbors namely Israel. After the threats were made to Israel that alone should have given them a green light to launch their own offensive. If the U.S. were threatened in a simular fashion Iran wouldnt have much of anything left by now.

If we really wanted to change the price of oil then the President should ask the population not to buy gas but once a week and use other modes of transportation instead such as public trans etc. That over time would certainly drive down the price per barrel. Once these other sources of fuel become more available I think you will see oil plummet farther then it has in the last 15 years. but that just my opinion.

Heres an idea....invest heavily in the Alberta Oil Sands...the Canadian Gov allows tens of thousands of immigrants into Alberta (a massive shortage of workers in alberta is delaying progress)+

Then OPEC wont have as much power, and dictate global prices like they do.

China would buy what we don't so the price of oil on the open market would not change much.

It's a question of realpolitik; what could they do? As someone else said, there would probably be protests lodged, etc, but in practical terms what could they do? Russia isn't going to go to war over Iran and neither is anyone else.

I'm not so sure that the Iranian government would necessarily collapse if their nuclear sites were attacked. Israel destroyed an Iraqi reactor and Saddam's regime didn't fall. Having said that I suppose it's possible that groups opposed to the Iranian government might see such attacks as an opportunity to try and topple the government.

I think the Iranian government itself won't let the situation get to the point where an attack is imminent. Yes they are being defiant just now, but they aren't stupid; they will know full well that if they push it too far they will get themselves involved in a war they can't win. In my opinion the whole nuclear issue is a bargaining ploy for them to increase their influence in the Middle East.

Iran no doubt wants to be the strongman of the Middle East, especially now that their chief regional rival, Iraq, is in a severely weakened state. However, they need American recognition of their role in the Middle East. They weren't interested in dealing with the EU alone, they wanted America in on the negotiations because they knew that's where they stood to gain most.
