    ABOUT 100 modern Russian tanks have been discovered abandoned on the side of a road in the country's Ural mountains.

    Video clips from the E1.ru website that were rebroadcast on Russian television showed local people clambering over some of the unguarded T-80 tanks that were parked in long rows in Kamishlovsk, about 100km from the Ural city of Yekaterinburg.

    "There are tanks all over the forest, abandoned," an unnamed reporter on the video says.

    "If you need one, come and get it."

    Russian military prosecutors are probing how the tanks, Russia's main battle tank, came to be left in such a situation, state news agency RIA reported.

    Russia is currently streamlining its massive military, with some commanders recently quoted in the Russian media as saying they only require half of the country's 20,000 tanks.

    Shoot, and those aren't just any old tanks, those are state-of-the-art T-80's with the gas-turbine engines; amazing that they haven't been missed until now. T-90's I could understand, but not T-80's!

    Its not 100. Its 200 of them. Mix of T-80s and T-72s.

    "We were shocked," Pavel L, a local, told Russian media. "It is like you can sit behind the wheel, start up the engine and drive off and nobody would notice!"
    )

    A military spokesman claimed the tanks were in fact being guarded by special patrols and were in the process of being dispatched to a military base. But military prosecutors appeared sceptical about his claims and opened an official investigation. Wary of further bad publicity, the army has urgently begun relocating the tanks.
    They are being moved now.

    Could be a hefty fuel bill if we tried to drive one home.

    On the plus side, I can tell people where to put that horn.

    Just don't stand behind, to the side or just about anywhere other than let's say within a 30 degree angle of the drivers hatch.

    And I'll be on the phone too, arguing about the phone bill being too expensive.

    Maybe the crews had the Russian Orthodox version of Rapture happen to them?
