And the attack on the US was deserved, (and ok), because there were almost exclusively 'responsible' adults killed. While Russia didn't deserve Beslan because they were children involved, neither country deserved any terror attacks, just because they were adults killed doesn't mean that it was any better. (Around ten times as many people died in 9/11 as in the Beslan school siege)

Snapper to be quiet honest Lviv would never vote to join anyone other than the part they are leading. During the "orange revolution" when it was uncertain which party is going to win the western side was going to succeed ergo Lviv/Ivano-Frankivsk etc they were going to form a diff nation.... Once the situation changed the other side wanted to leave... (you could search for it for declarations of Lviv governor etc)
They are basically the most nationalistic part of Ukraine by far.

Nonetheless, I always found it remarkable how people in satellite countries (with exception of Cuba and North Korea perhaps) have always enjoyed a higher standard of living then the most poor schmucks outside (or even "in" really) of Moscow/Leningrad on the average. I'm sure you are well aware that consumer goods were always on the backburner in favor of heavy industry etc. in order to sustain the military complex.
Russians are proud and strong, there is hardly a more resilient tribe or people more accustomed to hardships of warfare. This is probably not something one wants to test
