    What does Georgia give us?

Sorry to say this, but Georgia simply isn't important to our national security. It's great if we have it. No big loss if we don't.

Small nation...big nation...guess which one is more important?
What does Pakistan gain if the Taliban takes over Afghanistan?

And what does US gain holding on to Afghanistan or Iraq?

    That should answer your question.

    A puppet state/buffer zone?

Afghanistan - keep Pakistan in check.

    Iraq - why...oil of course.

Actually it doesn't. Georgia is nice to have if we want to bottle up Russia. But not entirely critical. Definitely not worth a shooting war against Russia. Russia is still way more useful to us than Georgia is. Risking Russians cutting off energy to western Europe or supplying nuclear technology/material to Iran is not worth us fighting on Georgia's behalf.

I know this wasn't addressed to me; I thought I'll add in my two bits.

If America wasn't "busy" in Iraq and Afghanistan, I doubt Russia would have reacted the way it did.

Russia saw a window of opportunity to hit a US ally in its (Russia's) backyard; it (Russia) took it. That is all that there is to this.

    Wrong!
The good Col has explained that. You won't stay put in Afghanistan for ages to keep Pakistan in check. The NATO/US is going for hot pursuits just to ensure that PA/ISI either meet your forces upfront, i.e. block the retreating lines of the Taliban/AQ otherwise sit back and allow the militants to hit soft targets within Pakistan. NATO/US has decided to pit the PA against the ISI-Taliban nexus.

That's akin to getting hit below the belt. Why make assurances to a proclaimed ally? Drafted and registered is not the excuse. If you make assurances then either you live upto it or make a mockery of your commitment and capacity to deliver. I am sad at Chaney's lip service. The Russian must have enjoyed that. See this is an inverse equation, the more is the verbal rhetoric with military inaction the lesser gets your credibility.
And on the sixth day, God created the Field Artillery...
