Absolutey, good summary, but the person setting the cheese is the hunter. This is a war Russia wanted and based on the troop build ups they were going to come one way or another.Zraver, I think we contradict little to each other. We both agreed that Georgians lacked common sense in their planning. But we both addmited that they had some a PLAN.... and they brought troops there.
It is now a common knowledge that Georgian offensive was done not by their peace keeping battalion, but 4th and 2nd brigades + artillery brigade + some artillery and tank units of 1st brigade, + separate tank regiment+ later reservists. All these force was there before Georgian army started offensive on Aug 7, at the time when they announced seize fire
We differ in one point. You stated that planning was only basic.... I state that it was STUPID, and their commanders must be not just fired but sent to tribunal.... for crime against GEORGIAN ARMY AND NATION. Stupid planning is indeed a crime agains your own people who were fighting on that plan!!!
Regarding Russian 58th and other units which came in so fast. ABSOLUTELLY no doubts that they were in high readiness and not far from the border. Russia clearly was preparing for Georgian offensive.... they were watching Georgian preparations and set a trap.... with poor osetians being a cheese in that trap.
Why Russia was prepared better? Probably its commanders are better... Georgians were thinking that they are hunter and Osetians are prey... in fact they were prey, ossetians were the cheese in the trap and Russians were the hunter
