Caucasus in crisis: Georgia invades rebel region - Telegraph
South Ossetia: Georgia preparing for war, Russia claims | World news | The GuardianThe Caucasus have descended into crisis after Georgian troops launched a full-scale military assault against Moscow-backed rebels in an attempt to wrest control of the breakaway region of South Ossetia.
Since a big part of this conflict is Georgia's wish to join NATO, I'm posting this here. If this isn't the right place, well, then I guess I'll find out.Earlier this week Russia, which has a peacekeeping contingent in the area, said it would not stand aside if serious fighting broke out. Busloads of South Ossetian children were evacuated to Russia last weekend. Abkhazia, on the Black Sea coast, said that in the event of war it was ready to come to South Ossetia's aid.
So, thoughts? This is pretty darn not good. Russia has been spouting a lot of rhetoric recently, and has been generally trying to hoist itself back to its former power. Russia already blatantly backs these rebels, so just how involved will Russia become in this? What will be the response of NATO? How bad will this get?
Smells like napalm, tastes like chicken!
