    ok

Russians are getting richer, sustained economic growth should be fine for quite awhile yet in Russia World energy prices, raw materials will make it so. But autocratic rule will not help nor sustain that growth forever.
Sustaining high growth under autocracy is the exception not the rule

[QUOTE=Skull6;458523]“Our democratic system is very young; we haven’t learnt how to package our image the way the Americans do.”

I'd think the way we Americans "package" this is by keeping our system open--open for others to speak with their voice & their vote, for good or ill.
You dont seem to understand the powerplays the Russians had to face during the 90's. Here is a ex-superpower, with all goodies all broken down and ready to raped. Russia wasnt some 3-rd world country which broke down, it was a super-power.
Imagine if the USA goes through what Russians went through, You would have gold-diggers running amok.

It's difficult for us Americans to trust dictators, because of this. Yes, elections have been held in Russia in the recent past. But Saddam used to hold elections as well, with very similar results, imo.
Oh, please. Putin won the election, Every poll conducted by very international media outlet shows over-whelming support for Putin.

I'll not fault Russia for trying to better itself. But, if in doing so, they fall back on the "old ways," I fail to see how they will actually achieve that betterment for their people.

    Nothing Sir,

I think you are unjustifibly biased against Putin, and somehow I am not suprised with trash that Western media has been talking about him. I see that you are interested really in Russian Politics and Putin particulary, The BBC series "Russian Godfathers" will open your eyes to how the Western media has been used by the Western governments and Oligarchs in particular to further their cause.

Indian English Newspaper's are less editorial opinioniated gibberish, and more balanced un-interesting News. Therefore just my humble suggestion.

    President of Russia

That is a wonderful speech by Putin, and he does a very self-critical view of the problems faced by the Russian Federation. As a Patriot myself, I can see his viewpoints and understand where he is coming from.

It's a wonderful speech. Now lets see him implement his words into actions. Yeltsin could make promises too. And Brezhnev before him.

    Comparing Putin to Yeltsin
Brezhnev was a commie, different era different system, not worth much in my book.

Brezhnev claimed to be a communist. Distinguish between claiming to be something, and actually attempting to implement something. Saddam Hussein claimed to be democratic......

EDIT: My point still stands. Most Russian leaders, in the last 50 years at least, have been known to make many promises that they really have had no intentions of keeping. Keep in mind they recently announced Russia is building 6 super carriers in the next 20 years. So when unreasonable promises like that are made by Putin's administration, don't fault me for being highly skeptical of their integrity.

    Feanor,

Regarding Putin, Look at the last 8 years. The man has done as good a job or better; as anyone can with all that he was facing, and the situation your country was in.
He can leave the Presidency at the end of his term with his head held high. I see a plan in Putin's Russian Revival, I expect Mendev to ease a bit more of rules and regulations slowly,

Those disgruntled with Russia stating Russia dissapoints thre World should look at their own countries first perhaps. The US and UK disaster in Iraq dissapoints many countries. The massive unemployment and lack of law and order are other large western problems too. Russia may not be an angel, but dont knock a country until your own house is in order.
