You are right according the desperate struggle of the Turkey to be a western country this is a big true.
The big joke of this is that they believe they will.
They don't understand how easy Americans (which are the greatest insurance for them for their existence) in time will simply abandon them to their very unpleasant fate.
They don't understand that the cost to maintain Turkey as it is for the Americans its becoming so big in general.
USA already builds a new kind of Turkey in the area a Turkey of low cost which will provide the same services and duties to US and NATO.
