I realize that the iskander is a conventional short range ballistic missile, but given the numbers that Russia will be fielding them in (lots if I'm not mistaken) why is Moscow even concerned about the dozen or so interceptor missiles planned for the region that 'might' be able to intercept it?

Furthermore, Russia already has an answer to the US missile shield, its called the RT-2UTTH Topol M ballistic missile.

Here's a few quick questions for you military experts!!

I'm not familiar with this topic, but........

"What's faster and cheaper to build.........a system of nuclear defensive weapons, or more nuclear weapons to counter it?"

    Thanks everyone!!

Depends. ABM systems are considerably more expensive at the moment, but that is because they are in the design and proto-type phase, while MIRVed nuclear missiles are already ready for mass production. However up until now we've gone almost entirely offense in strategic systems without paying any attention to defense.

Only time will tell how expensive a significant missile defense system will be to implement and maintain/further develop as our potential opponents acquire counter-measures as compared to the cost of those counter-measures.

Kazakhstan is also not happy with Russian meddling into their affairs.
Really? So then why did Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan enter into the five state Caspian Sea Treaty (with Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran)? And why are they forming a unified military command in accordance with the terms of the treaty, which requires each state to come to the aid of the other in the event of attack?

Obviously, you didn't read CIA testimony before the US Congress after the collapse of the USSR. After the CIA explained why it wasn't able to predict the collapse of the USSR down to the exact month, day, hour, minute and second, it went on to inform Congress that Russia would break up further into an additional 8 to 10 states unless Russia took certain specific actions and did not engage in other courses of action.

Putin has done everything the CIA said he should do (and more) to stabilize Russia and has not enacted any of the policies or plans that the CIA said would cause Russia irreparable harm.

Putin is the penultimate god-like poet warrior and should be elected Lord of the Universe along with Alexander Haig.

Why would it want to? Russia is having way too much fun watching Americans squirm with their (still) falling US Petro-Dollar that hasn't even come close to bottoming out yet.

    We'll see who's laughing when $1 = 1 Ruble.

Was it just stupid to choose to put the radar and missiles in Russias back yard, the US knows how much tension it would create.

Aren't these locations better, Southern Italian Coast, Sicily, A Greek Island or Cyprus.

The last few suggestions are locations that are within theoretical range of being hit by an Iranian nuclear missile but the other suggestions are considerably closer than Poland!? therefore quicker detection of a launch, and shorter missile interception time.

It seems that even Isreal could have the radar and interceptor missiles. All logic seems to point that the current proposed system is designed to counter Russian missiles aswell as Mid East Rogue states.

More importantly why is the US establishing ABM systems to protect Europe, why isnt Europe handling their own defence?

The US is just being its typical hostile, belligerent, aggressive self. Just think, we could have another Cuban Missile Crisis.

The US, without provocation, makes an overly aggressive and hostile move by placing ABMs in Poland (just like Kennedy put Jupiter MRBMs in Turkey that can annihilate Moscow).

In a win-win situation, Russia responds by putting ABMs in Cuba to achieve parity (just like the USSR put missiles in Cuba to counter the US threat).

Obama can rant and rave and threaten nuclear war, despite the fact that he knows through on-site human intel that the Russians aren't ready for war, and refuse to fight over Cuba (exactly as Kennedy knew through on-site human intel the Soviets' position).

After much blustering, Obama can cave in and agree to withdraw the ABM system from Poland if the Russians withdraw theirs from Cuba (just like Kennedy caved in like a wimp and agreed to withdraw the Jupiters from Turkey).

Then the Russians will withdraw their ABM from Cuba a few years after the US withdraws its ABM from Poland (just like the US withdrew the Jupiters from Turkey before the Soviets withdrew their missiles from Cuba).

    Satayana was right.

The Jupiters were obsolescent by the time the Russians "responded" (to your skewed way of thinking) by placing missiles in Cuba.

Part of the reason the Russians are making such a fuss is that they can't respond... sucks to be them.

An invasion of Cuba would have been a bloody fiasco precisely because we didn't have good intel. We thought there were roughly half as many Russians as there actually were, and those Russians had nuclear weapons with release authority given to the local commander to smash beachheads.
