China to conduct 30,000-troop military drill

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) will begin a military exercise on Sunday to test and improve the force's combat capability in high-tech warfare, sources from China's Central Military Commission said Saturday.

The exercise will involve 30,000 soldiers from three divisions across three of China's seven military area commands and include military transport planes, fighter jets and attack helicopters, sources said.

The drill, which will include infantry forces, paratroopers and air forces, will center around battle scenarios in a "complex information environment" as well as across different terrains and weather conditions, according to sources.

The exercise will also include long-distance mobilization of ground and air forces, and test their coordination in defense and striking military targets.

During the drill, the PLA will mobilize civilian passenger aircraft and cargo planes to transport soldiers and military equipment, sources said, adding the date to complete the drill has not yet been announced.

　　In early June, a group army of the Lanzhou Military Area Command (MAC) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) carried out a synchronized exercise of various arms in three different areas of the northwest China.

　　From the display screen in the field command center of the group army, the reporters saw the progress of the exercise. In Tengri Desert, a special operation element took an armed helicopter and penetrated into the enemy’s rear. In the hinterland of the Qilian Mountains, an attack group that combined different arms passed through the mine field and carried out assault. By the Weishui River, a brigade of the Second Artillery Force (SAF) fired its missiles against the “enemy” upon the request from the campaign army corps.

　　At the site of the exercise, He Qingcheng, commander of the group army, said that breaking the barriers of services and arms and establishing the mechanism of joint training and joint exercise speeded up the transformation of the combat power generation mode.

　　The group army has established a joint training mechanism with other services and arms including troop units of the Air Force, the SAF, the Army Aviation and the Chinese People’s Armed Police Force (APF) stationed in the theater. In the past three years, they have carried out joint exercises with troop units of various services and arms stationed in the theatre for 11 times in succession, which constantly improved the joint operation ability.

PLA Engineer Command College holds 1st cross-regional combined joint-training exercise

The Engineer Command College of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) organized a cross-regional combined joint-training exercise coded as "Vanguard 2011” on June 1 in the Queshan Combined Tactical Training Base of the Jinan Theater. This is the first cross-regional teaching-oriented exercise by mixing graduating cadets of this year, combat troops, reserve troops, research units and the combined tactical training base.

The participating troops involved nearly 2,000 people, including the graduating cadets majored in intermediate/junior command from the PLA Engineer Command College, a camouflage regiment under the PLA General Staff Headquarters (GSH), an engineer regiment of a group army of the PLA Nanjing Military Area Command (MAC), an engineer research institute under the GSH of the PLA, and reserve officers of the rotated training. The exercise employed 600-plus sets of large engineering equipment and devices. Taking joint mountain attack operation under information-based conditions as the background, this exercise highlighted such engineer subjects as road and bridge rush repair, field command post and helicopter landing field construction, artillery and air defense position camouflage, field water supply station creation, and sabotage of important objectives in enemy’s rear, meanwhile drilled on how to assist local government in the implementation of tasks such as disaster relief, counter-terrorism and explosive removal in military operations other than war, and carried out combat operation tests on 22 new types of large equipment including new field electronic protection shelter, contaminated road cleaning vehicle, armored barrier-breaking vehicle and rocket mine-laying system.

The aim of the "Vanguard 2011” exercise is to find out problems in joint-training and jointly explore a new combat power generation mode.
