"Iron Fist-2009" military exercise in Jinan MAC

    (Source: PLA Daily) 2009-11-27

The military exercise code-named "Iron Fist-2009" was held at the Queshan Combined Tactics Training Base of the Jinan Military Area Command (MAC) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army from November 18 to 23, 2009. According to Rong Guiqing, commander of a group army under the Jinan MAC, the unprecedented exercise conducted in complicated electromagnetic environment posed serious challenges to the troops participating in the exercise.

It is reported that the exercise directors arranged powerful electromagnetic interference (EMI) force to jam the C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) system of the “Red Army Division” during the whole process of the exercise.

Shortly after the beginning of the exercise, the “Red Army Division” launched EMI to disturb the roles of the C4ISR of the command post, radar station and combat information system of the“Blue Army Division”.

Various new type fire powers were employed in the precise strike of the exercise.

The troops on the “Red Army Division” side from the air force, army aviation force, anti-aircraft artillery and radar force also joined in the exercise.

During the exercise, the electromagnetic confrontation between the “Red Army Division” and the “Blue Army Division” lasted for several hours.

According to Zhou Youya, commander of the “Red Army Division”, the division has spent 3 years exploring the fighting methods in the confrontations of communication, radar, electro-optical warfare and network and boosting its capability of managing and controlling the electromagnetic spectrum. Such methods and capability have stood the challenge and test of this "Iron Fist 2009" military exercise.

PLA makes breakthrough in long-distance projection of heavy equipment

    (Source: PLA Daily) 2009-12-01

Recently, the armored troops of Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) successfully conducted a test-oriented exercise of long-distance heavy equipment projection, which symbolized that the heavy equipment of the PLA could be delivered to any designated combat zone by highway and the long-distance rapid maneuver support capability had been further enhanced.

The heavy equipment projection capability is an important index of the rapid reaction capability of a troop unit. In early 2009, the General Logistics Department (GLD) of the PLA established the first PLA heavy equipment transportation unit in a motor regiment. To test the maneuver support capability of the heavy equipment transportation unit, the GLD organized a test-oriented trans-Military-Area-Command (trans-MAC) heavy equipment projection exercise.

In the exercise, when the PLA armored troops’ railway transportation was impeded, the general commanding officer of the exercise decisively ordered the troops to transport the heavy-duty equipment by highway.

Upon receiving the order, the officers and men of the heavy equipment transportation company of the motor regiment under the GLD overcame the difficulties imposed by such negative factors as rugged and complicated road conditions and the overweight and outsized equipment, and smoothly transported the main battle heavy equipment of the armored battalion of a regiment to the designated region after a two-day long distance trans-MAC maneuver of 1,170-plus kilometers.

A total of 15 testing subjects were covered in this test-oriented exercise with the test focusing on the organizational procedure and methods for highway transportation of the organic heavy equipment transportation unit. Through the exercise, the heavy equipment transportation unit’s capabilities in transportation preparation, rapid loading and unloading, emergent call-out, transportation collaboration, organization and command, logistics support, guard and defense have been uplifted.

damn if you do damned if you don't.

Maybe they finally realized that something is needed between the Corps HQ and the General Staff Department run the theater ops. The ad hoc WZC HQ just won't cut it.

They are sure not going back to the MR.

    PLA improves strategic projection capability

    (Source: PLA Daily) 2010-02-04

According to the Military Transportation Department of the PLA General Logistics Department (GLD), over 1,000 railway stations in China have been equipped with military transportation facilities, establishing a rather complete railway support network and enhancing greatly the strategic projection capability of the Chinese armed forces.

The rapid development of China’s railway offered Chinese armed forces favourable opportunities to better its strategic projection capability. The GLD suggested to establish military facilities such as material loading and unloading facilities and military platforms, so as to keep pace with the national and local efforts to build new railways and rebuild the old ones.

Cooperated with the Ministry of Railway of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 2009, the GLD fulfilled over 100 military requirements for 20-odd railways in China and equipped these railways with the capability of military transportation.

In 2009, some related railway administrations invested large sums of money to rebuild the military transportation facilities for a few railway stations and ensured the smooth loading and unloading of the military equipment used for such important activities as “Peace Mission 2009” exercise and “military parade on National Day”.

In a bid to assure the military requirements for railway station construction, the GLD engaged in and traced the whole process of the national railway construction, ranging from the programming to the completion of the railway construction.

When building the railway from Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, to Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Ministry of Railway of the PRC revised partial route, prolonged 12.4 km of railways and increased 1.55 billion yuan, just for the purpose of meeting the maneuver requirement of the troops.

Joint training pilot of Jinan Theatre in 2010 starts up

    (Source: PLA Daily) 2010-03-01

On the morning of February 26, the joint training pilot of services and arms of the Jinan Theatre of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in 2010 started up.

According to a leading officer of the air force of the PLA Jinan Military Area Command (MAC), the joint training, which is divided into such two layers as theatre and basic campaign army corps, will go through the whole year of 2010. Under the leadership of the Jinan MAC, the training is respectively organized by the air force and a group army of the Jinan MAC. The joint training of this year will focus on exercising relevant missions and subjects, and make efforts to enhance the systematic combat capability based on information system according to the training approaches from unit composition to key element integration and finally to systematic integration.

It’s learned that the test and argumentation of the first theatre-level joint campaign training in the history of the PLA conducted in the Jinan Theatre in 2009 had preliminarily explored such joint training models as the military-civilian combination, integration of three services and integration of combat and training within the theatre, established a rather reliable leading mechanism which could efficiently operate for joint training of the theatre and all-roundly tested the operational efficiency of the integrated command platform for joint combat and joint training.

It’s learned that a batch of advanced equipment, including destroyer, reconnaissance satellite, early warning aircraft, reconnaissance aircraft and electronic warfare aircraft will participate in the joint training of the theatre.
