sorry,the point is not cost.
it is the CPU, not intel, not AMD, but chinese own Loongson 2F with independent intellectual property rights.
Loongson means the son of dragon.

Intel has a huge monopoly on microprocessors. They are really the only guys producing microprocessors for personal computers. It sort of makes one wonder, why the hell are they alone? With Boeing, the Europeans started Airbus, but Intel only has AMD, another American company that Intel strings along so no one can accuse Intel of being a monopoly.

The Loongson (more commonly known as Godson, a corruption of Gousheng, which means dog leftovers (not dog crap?), according to the Wiki gousheng was an infancy name in the tradition of giving humble names to children, to make them easier to raise) is good because at the very least it promises competition with Intel. When Intel is left without good competition, the consumer suffers by being forced to buy overpriced and underpowered chips. When Intel is forced into gear, the tech reviewers rave.

Unfortunately for everyone involved, the Godson 3 processor, which promises hardware emulation of the x86 chipset, is quite late. It was slated for late '08 and apparently has been moved to '10.

Yes it is running Linux. The CPU uses MIPS not x86 so it could not run windows.

The next gen 65nm Loongson3 could probably run windows, with hardware emulation.
