    Sino-US Relations, General Discussion.

With the ever deepening globanization that sees increasingly more and closer exchanges between different countries, not the least economically, dialogue and cooperation, alongside competition, seem to be the buzz word in the world today. So, given the tenor of our times, do you think China and the US can build a strategic partnership? Plz share with us your views on this topic.

I hope not. But with this administration, yeah, that may happen. Perhaps the first joint project could be a conquest of Taiwan by the PRC, and a totally inept response by the US to assist in the quick, uncomplicated resolution of the matter.

Like Czechoslavakia in '38, with the PRC playing the Nazis and the US aping the Brits. And the poor Taiwanese going down to defeat because they're as trusting as the Czechs were that a 'commitment' from a country under a weakling 'leader' actually is worth something.

Who knows? There may be a whole range of issues we could cooperate on.

For the Taiwan issue, I think it is much better to maintain the status quo than any of its disruption. The major reason is that the mainland China itself has a host of acute problems and challenges, which are already enough for the CPC to take good care of.

Then there are surely a lot of issues that China and the US can and even must cooperate on, such as environmental protection, fight against terrorists, economics and trading. Given the twisted bilateral ties and vastly different ideologies between the two countries, for the strategic partnership to be forged takes political will and wisdom, doesn't?

I think the "strategic partnership" is just a international political slogans, rarely practical.

China and the US can work together on particular problems, like North Korea for example, but in general they are competitors on the international scene. In Africa for example, they have divergent interests concerning natural resources, oil in particular.

They are funding our war in Iraq. We have bought each other if that is the proper way to say it.

Better letting the Chinese solve the refugee crisis than having the South being flooded.

The US government recognizes that Tibet is part of China, still less to say Xinjiang, which has been claimed by some as East Turkestan.

Strategic partnership or any normal diplamatic ties presuppose the recongnition of territorial integrity of each other.

I also wonder whether it is of necessity or by choice that the two powers can become strategic partners.

China and Russia, with the wisdom of both sides' politicians, have undertaken to build a strategic partnership.
