I think, you have to ask yourself: Is China's rise peaceful?
If you believe this rise will remain peaceful, then the string of pearls idea does not hurt others.
If you are very suspicious of China's intentions, then you will seek to 'contain' China.
I hold the view that 'containment' will not work. The world will need to engage China.
