China Authorizes Attack on Taiwan; Warns U.S.

This could mean major problems, not just for Asia. Millions of jobs are at stake.

It's not only jobs. Given the fact that the USA have supported Taiwan since Mao's victory over nationalist forces in mainland China, a war between China and Taiwan is likely to force the USA into such a conflict.

The US is obliged by US law and treaty(Taiwan Defense Act of 1996) to protect Taiwan militarily in any conflict where the PRC is the aggressor.

If the Chinese attack, it will mean war between the US and China.

Then I better start investing in some factories, since all the business will spill over to India.
Brig. Ray sir, you can handle the shipping from the ports in Calcutta. Sniper can handle the recovery of payments from the US.
And Colonel sir, may get pulled in by the spooks for his sino studies, so we may have to base him in the east. Calcutta is safe enough a location for him, and he'll have Brig.Ray for company.
See, I have already given a recommended deployment for the WAB memebers if war breaks out...I should have stayed on in the army and done staff college at least.

I dont think US will do anything about it. The Chinese have chosen the right time to up the ante. USA is already tied up in afghanistan and Iraq. Can US really afford another war?!

Yeah, war.
Uh.
Two countries with nuclear missiles will be stupid enough to attack each other. Openly, with battle cries and war marches.
Typical понты (how to translate “понты”, I wonder?) and nothing more.

I don't know what the word means but it is pronounced either panti or ponti. Determined by its ending its plural. If thats Russian of coarse.

It could be translated as blustering in this context.

China may not have near the military force the US has but China is not stupid by any means of the imagination. Ever heard there is more than one way to skin a cat? Well, China definitely has an alternative way.

China will not allow Taiwan to obtain it's independence, they have made that very clear. The US has made clear that it believes in China and Taiwan as one nation, BUT will defend Taiwan if attacked by China.

China currently holds trillions of dollars of the US Debt in dollars....and should they dump them, the US economy would take a nosedive....so much so that the US could not possibly defend Taiwan and/or declare war on China....it just would not be financially feasible.

China is fully aware of this situation with the US, now China has taken this opportune time to take this step against Taiwan, while warning the US to boot.

It is my contention that China fully intends to give Taiwan an ultimatum and if they do not comply China will strike, all the while telling the US, you defend them, we will throw your dollars in the trash and crash your economy so you can not pay to send ANYONE over here to defend Taiwan.

It's a pretty critical situation from my point of view, and it makes me very uneasy that Bush has allowed the US to fall into this situation at this point in time.

We always have US Navy vessels in the Straits of Taiwan, and have you ever heard the expression "the Chinese dont have enough rowboats to invade Taiwan"? Granted, they easily have the manpower to overrun the ROC (Taiwan) forces, but they dont have the means to project that manpower.

That's irrelevant. It's US law.

The US would be compelled to act, that's why they call it a 'treaty'.

Julie, you GREATLY overestimate China's ability to affect the US Economy. Shooting one's self in the foot is hardly a good way to start a war off.

Are you sure about that? Do you know what countries own the US debt? Do you know what would happen if one of those countries decided to call for that debt to be repaid? China needs the US market, but in an economic downturn Americans will still be buying plenty of Chinese goods. However, in the case of war, I guess there would probably be an embargo.

Anyway, China realizes that its in their best interests to seek peaceful reunification. I think it will happen eventually. But for now, they know that they could take over Taiwan with force. It wouldn't be that hard to manufacture a thousand invasion boats.

Same posturing as a year ago. Taiwan didn't have the votes to become independant then, do they now? If they do, and China attacks them for that, anyone who doesn't support Taiwan is a total ****.
