This is just so sad! I really don't even know what to say other than my thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of the victims!
I hope that they will find more survivors but almost know in my heart that that probably won't happen. ![]() I was looking at pictures on MSNBC and couldn't believe the destruction!! Have we heard from any of our board members from China? ![]()

This sure is different than 30 years ago when an earthquake killed 1/4 million and the outside world didn't even know about it until years later.

Someone already posted it already! lollololololol!
China's earthquake and the Mandate of Heaven - How the World Works - Salon.com Although, I don't agree with the understanding of the Mandate of Heaven. Imo, the Mandate of Heaven is a tautological construction. If natural disasters occur, and the government can't maintain order and provide governmental services, it is no longer a government, is it? Heaven withdrawing its mandate has nothing to do with it, you might as well call the act of suicide a sign that heaven has withdrawn its mandate to life. If you follow the concept, the rise in natural disasters due to human-caused climate change, this must also indicate that "Heaven" has withdrawn its sanction for Western civilization, right? Or rather, since industrial countries can now affect the rate of disasters, then he who controls the carbon controls the sanction. |

I tend to agree with you on this. Most of the articles that have appeared predicting doom and gloom for the Chinese government as a result of this tragedy are nonsense. I can only vouch for the people I know here, but everyone I have spoken with knows that there was nothing that the government could have done to prevent this and all are satisfied with its response to the quake. Really, if you compare how China has reacted to this quake with the response of the government of Myanmar to their recent cyclone or even how the Bush administration dealt with Hurricane Katrina you see that this Chinese government is doing pretty well all things considered. If anything this is another chance for the government to bolster its position.
