Forget the Nun, Here is the flying Priest

This is a South Park episode just waiting to happen...

Quote:

Search crews in Brazil have found a bundle of balloons off the coast that were being used by a priest who went missing trying to set a flight record.

Father Adelir de Carli lifted off from the port city of Paranagua on Sunday strapped to 1,000 helium balloons.

Although equipped with flotation equipment, a satellite phone and GPS, contact was lost with him late on Sunday after he was blown off course.

He wanted to break a 19-hour record for the most hours flying with balloons.

He was trying to raise funds to provide a rest stop for lorry drivers in Paranagua, a major port for agricultural products.

Rescue hopes

Father Carli's bundle of brightly-coloured balloons was found floating in the Atlantic Ocean off Santa Catarina state, near the point where he last made contact with authorities on the ground.

Rescue officials were holding out hopes he would still be found alive.

He was wearing a helmet, parachute, thermal flight suit, waterproof coveralls and a buoyant chair. He is also an experienced skydiver.

"Given his physical condition and the equipment he was carrying, I would say there is 80% chance that he is still alive," said Johnny Coelho, chief of the Penha Fire Department.

Father Carli, a Roman Catholic priest, was carrying enough food and water for five days and there was a chance he was still drifting in the ocean or had been washed ashore on a remote section of the coast, said Mr Coelho.

'Losing height'

In a phone interview with Brazilian TV channel Globo on Sunday, he said he was having difficulty operating his GPS device, and was "very cold, but fine".

He was said to have reached an altitude of 20,000ft (6,000m), then descended to about 8,200ft for his planned flight to the city of Dourados.

But he was blown off course by winds and when last contacted was floating several miles off the coast.

Before losing contact, he said he had to land in the sea as he was "losing height".

In January, the priest used the same mode of transport to fly over 110km (70 miles) in four hours between Parana and the nearby Argentine city of San Antonio.

I'm sure there are more sensible ways to raise money for charity!

An adventurous Priest.

I hope he is found soon.

I would like to look at it differently.

He put his life on line for a noble cause, rather than move around with the begging bowl with high moral claptrap as is normally done by the religious blokes!

But yes, there could be other ways too!!

My avatar is a Priest at my School's Founder's Day!!

I just think that to attach yourself to a bunch of birthday balloons and go off on an adventure is pretty much asking to be awarded a Darwin Award

Being at the whim of the winds aloft he must have caused consternation to the air traffic controllers, to say nothing of anyone flying in that area!

Air traffic control is a specialised subject that pilots and ATC men can alone talk about.

In fact, our PM's plane had a scare recently since an Air Force Denier's transponder malfunctioned!!

I am not aware if balloons can screw up the ATC.

I am a helicopter pilot with 20 minutes level and steady flight and A Dakota pilot with auto pilot to fiddle!

Both illegal!!

Ah? B'wana, your school has a priest? I thought most of Indians dont believe in Christ But the atmosphere in your avatar is very nice.

The priest in the news may want to get closer to the god, in the air, face-to-face

Yes, he is an Anglican priest.

We do believe in Christ. There are people of all religion and denominations in India.

In fact, when I was in school I was in the choir!

I doubt that God is at the sky.
He may be anywhere, even in one's subconscious.
briefly, one can fly everyday in his/her subconscious!
of course, some may use drugs either. that is more effective.
actually, marx said it almost one century before me. but what if one may apply "reverse engineering" to his famous clause?--->
is ateism a religion

what they say "brainstorming" is this!

You experienced a lot in your life.

B'wana, do you have some ideas about why more and more people in China dont have any religion any more?

Those believing in Buddhism nowadays are usually seniors and people in Taiwan. I dont think it is a good phenomenon.

It is seldom to hear "marx" from a foreign friend's mouth

Marx said, no god exists. His comrade, Engels said, god is human being's "son".

Human beings create a image of the god and it do can be anywhere.

In fact, if cats have their own god, the god must look like a cat.

Snc, you are from Turkey?

India is secular Fiona. Thus people of different religions live here. Even in my school, the principle was always a priest. He used to come in white robe and all paraphernalia. As a kid, I used to look at him in awe, because I was seeing a priest first time in my life .

Many people, even if they have an official religion tag, have become non practising, since the life has become too fast and hectic.

Then the way the world is moving gives one a lot of heartaches and disappointments and so one wonders where is God?

And then the fact that no one has seen God and the clergy seem to be manipulating the people. More disappointment as one see this.

Therefore, one just stop thinking of religion.

I have no religion, though I believe in the Creator - some unknown force that has created this Universe. And I believe in the bounties of Nature the Creator has given us, like the Sun, Air, Trees, Fire etc. Some think it is being a pagan. So be it!!

I can see and feel these things.

I can't see God.

But the good words of all religions help me to understand my place as a social animal.

About my School, the Principal is not a Priest. He is a normal Christian. What you are seeing is the Founders' Day proceedings.
