Who knows, if Skopje still exist in 50 years time, maybe they will claim then they are the genuine descendants of Napoleon or Robin Hood or Tutankhamun or…
If Greece still exist for more 50 years, they may claim that Robin Hood was Greek and his name was Robin Hoodi...

There were locals in Macedonia before Dorians came from north like Slavs did. Alexander's Macedonia was not made up only Greeks... Macedonia was and is Macedonia. But USA was and is English.

I do have a serious question: how come if Macedonia is Greece, why isn't Greece called Macedonia? I mean that's a cool name. If I came from there I'd call it makkers. "Where you from?" "Makkers mate"

So how come the Makedonians snuck up and pinched your name, a name you hadn't got around to using yourselves in however many millennia Greece has been around.....
its a provence of greece, just like thessaly and epirus.Does the usa call itself texas or nevada but yet they are still america.

"we are slavs who came to this area in the 6th centuary. we are not decendents of the ancient macedonians"-kiro gligorov (fyrm president 26/02/1992)

"we are macedonian but we are slav macedonian. We have no connection to alexander the greek and his macedonia"-also words form kiro gligorov (15/3/1992)

Who cares about that? What a childish debate..Let the Macedonians call themselves Macedonians..Btw Alexander the great that you hold dear today was considered by the ancient Greeks (your direct ancestors of course!) as a semi-barbarian. a FOREIGNER!!

Nicholas Hammond, one of the world’s best authorities in Macedonian history, stated the following in an interview with the magazine “Macedonian Echo” in February, 1993:
(Q): Who were the Macedonians ?
(A): The name of the ancient Macedonians is derived from Macedon, who
was the grandchild of Deukalion, the father of all Greeks. This we may
infer from Hesiod’s genealogy. It may be proven that Macedonians spoke
Greek since Macedon, the ancestor of Macedonians, was a brother of
Magnes, the ancestor of Thessalians, who spoke Greek.

(Q): Isn’t it true that Demosthenes called them “barbarians” ? (A): The speeches of Demosthenes, that deal with Philip as the enemy,
should not be interpreted as an indication of the barbarian origins of
Macedonians, but as an expression of conflict between two different
political systems: the democratic system of the city-state (e.g.Athens)
versus the monarchy (Kingdom of Macedonia).

As a resident of a nation with a large Greek-born population this is an issue which pops up here from time to time. Unfortunately there are some ethnic groups (my own dear Irish being among them) which suffer from forms of voluntary mental illness when it comes to history.

There are still Irishmen who act as if the Battle of the Boyne happened last week; there are Serbs who act as if they were present at the Field of the Blackbirds; there are Muslims who still think the Crusades are still happening; there are Turks who think all those dead Armenians were 'casualties of war'; there are Croats who think Jacenovac was an act of self defence; there are Americans who think they won the Vietnam War; there are Chinese who believe the students were the agressors in Tiananmen square. there are Greeks who are still obsessed with Alexander. The list is tragically long.

Laughably childish if it were not for the the fact that some of these people think it is worth screwing up the real her & now over.

I live in a city (Melbourne) which has a counterpart of the same name in Florida. No wars so far. If some new nation wants to name itself 'Victoria', 'Tasmania', 'Queensland', 'South Australia' or even 'Western Australia' they are welcome to (though it might cause some confusion). If they want to call themselves Australians we'd probably tell them to stop being silly & let the rest of the world decide how seriously they take it. Not worth making fools of ourselves in front of the reat of the world over.

There are a lot of people in this world who just need to grow up & stop living in some imagined past.

There's definitely something in the Balkans that makes people silly when you talk about the past.. All the past grievances come up: you did that, you were the collaborators, we heroically resisted against the ennemy....

That doesn't necessarily mean it will always be called that.

I'm not mad at the Slavs, I'm mad at people who steal on purpose other people's history and misrepresent the facts.
Also at people who hypocritically support them for their own secret and cheap agendas, while deep down they know they are wrong.

This information is well known to me long time ago, I didn't just dig it up.
Their ethnic composition is one of the reasons why they should not be called Macedonians. There are other reasons equally valid too, besides that.

Well when president Bush calls them Macedonians it is not the only blunder that he has made or done. Why you think 70% of the American people are against his policies.
Bringing him as an example for imitation doesn't fly.
There are good reasons why a lot of Greeks feel apostrophy for the policies of this country. It is not just Macedonia, there are other issues as well.
And what about me that I'm American and I don't hate America? Why you think I feel that way?[/quote]

When anyone reads the New York Times, someone with some brains in his head, has to be very carefull for the bias and the propaganda so unashamedly display and try to propagate.
I used to read it and I stoped for this exact reason.

Parihaka the name Macedonia is the name of a region in Greece, which has 2,500,000 Greeks more than what the Scopians have in their whole ministate.

At the end you'll try to tell us that Alexander the Great was a Turk.
What a joke.

People who are doing that are doomed to extinction.

Yes they did.
Originally a lot of Greeks woudn't accept the word Macedonia included for their description of their country.
For the sake of resolving the issue the Greeks later even offered them to include the word Macedonia with an adjective in front of it, like "Upper Macedonia" as you very well said or even "New Macedonia", since they reside in 39% of ancient Macedonia.

Well now then, they won't even accept that, because they think since Bush is behind them, showing his ignorance of course about the situation, they can have their way.
Their intransigence is beyond imagination, and these people want to join NATO as allies, not to mention EU later on.

It is you brother. Have you ever seen a Turkish diplomat blames Hungarians because they are not Huns but Macars or did Turks forced any non-turkic country for changing their flag because they are using crescent moon on their flag.
