Japan to launch new passenger jet

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has confirmed it is going ahead with a $1bn (£500m) project to launch Japan's first home-grown passenger jet aircraft.
The Mitsubishi Regional Jet will target the short and medium-haul market for smaller aircraft dominated by Brazil's Embraer and Canada's Bombardier.

Seating between 70 and 90 passengers, Mitsubishi said it intended to get the first planes into service by 2013.

It has already had orders for 25 of the jets from Japan's Nippon Airlines.

Mitsubishi has been sounding out market reaction to the plane in recent months, and says it aims to sell 1,000 of the jets over the next 20 to 30 years.

The engines will be supplied by US giant Pratt & Whitney.

China and Russia are also working on the development of similar new regional jets, which is one of the fastest growing sectors of the aircraft industry.
