Ivan,

Once again you presume to know too much. So you were an athiest once. Why do you think this gives you such a broad insight that you presume to know why all us unbelievers don't believe?

While I was baptised & attended church as a child, I have never been a Christian. As a child I simply believed as I was told. Like all children moving to adulthood I reached a point where I began to establish my own beliefs. I didn't 'reject' Christianity, I just didn't believe.

I have no negative personal experiences to relate that formed this view. I wasn't abused by a priest or subjected to an unpleasant upbringing. I am not bitter toward Chrisitianity. I didn't witness any more hypocricy from Christians than from anyone else. Indeed I cannot recall a single negative comment on religion from my parents. I have just never believed in Gods. I am not into metaphysics. It was & is a personal philosophical decision.

I too realise that people are imperfect - something I managed to work out absent of religious revelation. What I resent is when they think that their fantasy world (Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Cao Dai, Zoroastrian or 'animist') gives them the right to dictate how I & others live our lives.

I should also point out that I don't strictly see myself as an athiest in the traditional sense. I do not BELIEVE there is a God and I live my life under this assumption. I do not feel, however, there is any way I can KNOW this for sure. I am not omniscient (just damned clever ).

I wise man might read the above & consider that, being so wrong in one case he might just be wrong in others. In case this wisdom eludes you, next time you decide to share your insights into the athiest mind, specifically leave me out.

I was replying to sniper, I had mentioned Glyn but I can't say I ever included you in my post. In fact without a doubt...I did not enter you into my post.

Or are you a sock puppet of Glyn?

And I think once being an atheist is quite relevant to me as it gives me a bit more insight into the subject of not believing in God.

It was either the aneurysm or eating the bark off of some tree that gave me that vision. Or maybe it was the blunt trauma to the head...I'm not sure it was all a blurrr.

PS It didn't take me becoming a Christian to figure out people were not perfect...You do a lot of assuming, but hey nobodies perfect.

There you go again Ivan! I don't think I suffer from bitterness. Cynicism is what I have, but I don't suffer from it - I enjoy it! You differentiate between Christians and Catholics. Hmm. The bee is in your bonnet, not mine. My hands were not assaulted by a nun! Sorry to rain on your parade. To(o) many hypocrites growing up? Pass. And as for rye wit, well you malign me. I am teetotal! Insults? Not really. I hold no malice towards you. If I did you would find out what insults really are. How about 'lackwit bumpkin' to be getting on with?

I got the impression from your many post on the subject that there may have been some bad blood between you and the Christian set. I am wrong again! Darn.

I hold no bitterness to Catholic's or Christian's. Even before I became a born again believer I had never to my recollection any bad experiences with either to write home about. In fact I had only good experiences with regards to believers...well...nothing really serious that I couldn't get over. And when ever I had anything vaguely resembling a bad experience it was more to do with the person and less to do with their faith.

So I guess I'm not too perfect after all...but it seems I've got you to be my spelling and grammar check.

You're no 'lack wit bumpkin', not by a long shot. Maybe a hardheaded cantankerous, limey, curmudgeon. No 'lack wit'.

I didn't think you held any malice toward me. And I certainly don't toward you.

By the way toward in your paragraph doesn't need that there 's'.

Ivan

Christian - Catholic

I have always found this curious as a devout lapsed Catholic why some people separate Catholicism from Christianity when they discuss religion.

Silly me...I always thought my belief in Christ made me a Christian!

So much for 12 years of Catholic school growing up...I guess the Jesuits were all wrong.

OK, I was gonna quote some of this but instead I will just address it this way.

WHOOOAAAAA, BIG FELLA!!!! Before you want to "give me a hint" I suggest you read a little further back down the thread! I AM AN AGNOSTIC! I know quite well it is NOT a religion. It means that I do not have enough information to dedicate myself to a belief. By nature I am not the trusting type and I absolutely do never enter into doctrine blindly. However I do have a strict policy of "to each his own" until it threatens me or those who value freedom and life.

I am sure you realize that ALL who are not of muslim faith as set forth in the koran(spelling?whatever!) are infidels. Infidels are to embrace the word of allah or must punished by death. Look it up, its a fact. YOU are a infidel as am I. So far I have yet to find a christian, jew, hindu, buddist, athiest, agnostic, etc.... that wants to kill me because I dont want to be MADE to think nor believe like them.

AND Even if you are a muslim you are not safe!!! If you are a moderate Muslim...They hate you too. The enemy of my enemy is my friend! And YES, I know there are athiests in muslim countries, THEY ARE INFIDELS TOO!

Let me make this even clearer-

If your gay- I don't care-just don't act like a flaming jackass in public!
If your caucasian, negro, mongolian, whatever, don't care.
If you hate guns-dont care-just don't try to take mine.
If you fat, skinny, smart, stupid, whatever-Don't care!
If I left anybody out-don't care!
If you want to kill me FOR ANY REASON-Bring lunch, luck, and help! Your gonna have a problem!

This war did NOT start 5yrs ago in Iraq. Its been going on a looooong time my friend. And I got some news for you, its about to get a hell of a lot worse. The indications of another all out global conflict should be as plain as the computer screen in front of your face!

MORONS IN THE WEST-First let me help you-There are morons at the other three points of the compass. The west does not own the market. Now... If someone came up to you, sucker punched you right in the mouth, and then took of down the street, would you not pursue this person(as soon as you realized what happened and could react) and go kick thier friggin ass?! I would! And I'm quite proud to know we (USA/western morons)have a leader who is just "moron" enough to lead the charge to the chickenshit thugs who just suckered us!

Now with that being said, I absolutely agree with the last two paragraphs of your post were you quoted Brockensickle(except for leaving me out) I like to be invloved in challengng conversation.

BROCKENSICKLE=
Thank you for quoting me properly. My wife is catholic, my family are Baptists, I'm just an old soldier. We are all in this together, and if my comrades want to pray while reloading, thats fine with me, just don't take too long. I might be running low on ammo.

Didn't mean to piss anyone off here. I just take 9-11-01 as a hell of a sucker punch! And when such discourse comes about I have to ask the one who criticizes--You got a better idea? And, What are YOU doing about it?

If I misunderstood anyone I apologize, please explain!

The majority of the west believes in freedom of speech. If you plan to emigrate there, plan to accept their values as the values of your new home country. If you are offended by a specific cartoon, article, or any other media, feel free to use your freedom of speech in your new country to criticize it. You also have the choice of not buying the newspaper that offended you, not watching the station or program that offended you... You also have the option of going back home.

The use of violence will only harm you and the people who share a similar religion, skin color, ethnicity... as you.

And thats a slap in the fact to the thousands of "Non God Fearing" Patriots that have served.

Its seems to be the Christian "Once they get in trouble, they will realize how wrong they are (and how right we are) and call out to God". A smug feeling of superiority.

And yes I have been an atheist in a foxhole. And I knew plenty more.

Oh for Pete sakes, you guys forgotten Murphy?

Murphy's Military Laws:
1. Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you are.

Murphy's Military Laws:
2. No battle plan ever survives contact with the enemy.

Murphy's Military Laws:
3. Friendly fire ain't.

Murphy's Military Laws:
4. The most dangerous thing in the combat zone is an officer with a map.

Murphy's Military Laws:
5. The problem with taking the easy way out is that the enemy has already mined it.

Murphy's Military Laws:
6. The buddy system is essential to your survival; it gives the enemy somebody else to shoot at.

Murphy's Military Laws:
7. The further you are in advance of your own positions, the more likely your artillery will shoot short.

Murphy's Military Laws:
8. Incoming fire has the right of way.

Murphy's Military Laws:
9. If your advance is going well, you are walking into an ambush.

Murphy's Military Laws:
10. The quartermaster has only two sizes, too large and too small.

Murphy's Military Laws:
11. If you really need an officer in a hurry, take a nap.

Murphy's Miltary Laws:
12. The only time suppressive fire works is when it is used on abandoned positions.

Murphy's Military Laws:
13. The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire.

Murphy's Military Laws:
14. There is nothing more satisfying that having someone take a shot at you, and miss.

Murphy's Military Laws:
15. Don't be conspicuous. In the combat zone, it draws fire. Out of the combat zone, it draws sergeants.

Murphy's Military Laws:
16. If your sergeant can see you, so can the enemy.

Murphy's Military Laws:
17. There is no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole.

Wow Sir, I've never seen that list. Some similarities but Is that the Canadian Forces version?

I knew the Atheist in Foxholes as an Ernie Pyle quote.

But here are a few Murphy rules

Quote:
If the enemy is in range, so are you.

If you can see the enemy, they can see you.

Professionals are predictable, it's the amateurs that are dangerous.

The enemy only attacks on one of two occasions: When you're ready for them, and when you're not ready for them.

Teamwork is essential; it gives the enemy someone else to shoot at.

If you can't remember, the claymore is pointed at you.

The enemy diversion you have been ignoring will be the main attack.

Don't draw fire, it irritates the people around you.

When the pin is pulled, Mr. Grenade is not our friend.

If it's stupid but works, then it isn't stupid.

When in doubt empty the magazine.

Anything you do can get you shot. Including doing nothing.

Mines are equal opportunity weapons.

A Purple Heart just proves that were you smart enough to think of a plan, stupid enough to try it, and lucky enough to survive.

Don't ever be the first, don't ever be the last and don't ever volunteer to do anything.

Five second fuses only last three seconds.

When you have secured an area, don't forget to tell the enemy.

Never forget that your weapon is made by the lowest bidder.

Things that must be together to work usually can't be shipped together.

Radios will fail as soon as you desperately need fire support.

Tracers work both ways.

If it moves, shoot it.

If it doesn't move, poke it with your gun barrel and then shoot it.

Overkill works

The date on my file reads 1979, so I must have gotten it back in NDHQ. So I assume that it's CF.
