A Report in from Canada
It is increasingly a condition of employment, especially for government or Provincial jobs that one be able to speak both English or French. Which makes the following post quite surreal.
The Harper family was making use of the pool when one of their two children encountered some difficulty and cried for help. The lifeguard ignored the cries. The child again cried for help again and once more the lifeguard seems uninterested, so Stephen himself, now enraged, had to plunge fully dressed into the pool to rescue the boy. Afterwards, Harper grilled the lifeguard. "You ass! Didn't you see that my son was in trouble?" "Yes sir", he said. "Well why in the name of God didn't you jump in and go help him"?, Harper roared. "BBBecause I can't swim", stuttered the lifeguard. "How the hell did you land the job of lifeguard, if you can't swim ?" ''I'm bilingual."he replied.

Just the opposite in the US. We cannot ask an employee to know English UNLESS it could result in grave harm or death to a coworker. And even then it's iffy.

Communication Problems
A British army commander on military duty had his horse throw a shoe. The only shop available was the Pipe fitters and Plumbers. Oh well, the commander said to himself , how could they mess up a re-shoeing? The pipe fitters told the officer they had never " Done " a horse , but they would take a jolly good stab at it.
Later that day the cammander stopped by the shop to pick up his horse. There she lay on her back with all fours in the air !! Inspecting the shoe , the commander congratulated the men on their work and asked why she was laying still with her legs up in the air? She's been like that since we got her out of the vice sir was the reply. ![]() |

haha dear lord how true it is.
My brothers girlfriend is bilingual. She speaks english very well, but her French is a little iffy..just because of the fact that english is her first language. She landed a Government job about 6 months ago in Ottawa. She was to be promoted, so she had to do a test, to test her skill in French. She told us how unfair it is in the government. English people seeking jobs must jump through hoops to prove that they are excellent in conversing with French. While French people seeking jobs, can be horrible with english..but as long as they are reasonably fluent they will pass the english test with flying colours. It is almost a double standard.. Luckily, after much stressing, and after speaking nothing but French for the past few weeks, she nailed the test..and got the big fat promotion!! |
