Youtube blocked for offense to Islam

First Wiki now Youtube has fallen foul of the Islamic free speech police/nutters.

Pakistan is to block Youtube until any and all content that is considered blaspemous is removed.
This along with the demands to Wiki are no doubt the opening gambits in a game that the civilized world can not afford to lose.

Will the rest of the world stand behind Wiki, Youtube, Denmark and anyone else who is deemed a transgressor or will we just watch while the nut case, school yard thug beats up on the little guys, all the time gaining strength, bravado and accomplices to pick on all at will.

Pakistan blocks YouTube for 'blasphemous' content
Email Printer friendly version Normal font Large font February 25, 2008 - 6:57AM

Pakistan has ordered all internet service providers to block the YouTube website for containing "blasphemous" content and material considered offensive to Islam, officials said today.

An inter-ministerial committee has decided to block YouTube because it contained "blasphemous content, videos and documents," a government official told AFP.

"The site will remain blocked till further orders," he said.

Other officials said the site had been blocked because it contained controversial sketches of the Prophet Mohammed which were republished by Danish newspapers earlier this month.

One major service provider, Micronet, said in an email to subscribers that the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority had directed all ISPs to block access to YouTube "for containing blasphemous web content/movies."

"Meanwhile Internet users can write to YouTube.com to remove the objectionable web content/movies because this removal would enable the authorities to order un-blocking of this website," the email said.

At least 17 Danish newspapers republished the controversial drawing, vowing to defend freedom of expression a day after Danish police said they had foiled a plot to murder the cartoonist.

In the latest in a series of demonstrations over the cartoons in Pakistan, activists from a hardline Islamic organisation burned a Danish flag in the the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta on Sunday.

"It is a deliberate attempt to malign Islam and hurt the feelings of Muslims," Habib Shah Kerani told the protesters from the Anjman-e-Islam (Organisation of Islam) group.

They also demanded the government close Danish missions in Islamabad and sever diplomatic relations, witnesses said.

Some 12 cartoons published in September 2005 by the Danish Jyllands-Posten newspaper sparked bloody riots in the Islamic world.

Five people died in Pakistan in February 2006 during protests against the cartoons, while a Pakistani cleric offered a reward of one million dollars and a new car for anyone who killed any of the cartoonists.

Their techs actually managed to bring down the whole site worldwide via PCCW for an hour or so on Sunday. PCCW are categorising it as a regrettable mistake, but their kharma level is plummeting.

A lot.

Go be primitive somewhere else.

If Americans (and by extension, Bush) hadn't invented the internet, then Pakistan wouldn't have had to ban Youtube.

Is that why Youtube was down at 11:00pm or so Indian standard time. What is PCCW?

Just heard, there is some allegation of rigging in election which came in youtube. A video showing man putting multiple votes etc?

Well, we could show them how much we value free speech by cutting off aid & funding for their government & military. Perhaps a few well placed embargoes. Freeze some investments. Sanctions. Stuff like that.

Actually, we have been arming & funding them for decades, including when they were committing genocide in East Pakistan, turning the remainder of Pakistan into an Islamic State & setting up the basis for AQ & friends. Didn't give a stuff about free speech then, only pay a bit of lip service now.

'Realpolitik' will win out this time as it always has. And Muslims are supposed to be the ignorant ones.

Actually the internet began when Johnson was president. The world wide web came to being during the Clinton years when Gore "invented" the internet. I suppose we could blame Bush because Youtube started under the Bush administration. The best part is Google owns Youtube and hates Bush...

I hope you know their LESS crazies isnt equal to ours. I have been seeing this in all most all the forums. These 'less crazies' wants sharia and are not; I REPEAT are not SECULAR. Pakistani minorites Christians, Sikhs and Hindu's are still a subjugated lot, a methodology if it was in south africa will be called APARTHIED

It is still the KKK or Black Panthers winning and AQ loosing, In that context, yup they are less crazy.

Actually, it does.

No surprise that the religious parties got a right shellacking. Without their benefactors in the army & government they will return to the fringes from whence they came.

It took the army the better part of a generation to try to 'islamicize' Pakistan. Hopefully the army will return to the barracks & let secular parties repair some of the damage.

Some of them are, it is my understanding that there are two main party winners. One fairly secular, one not.

Hence my "less crazies" remark.
