Jean Marie Le Pen arrested for war crime remarks

Le Pen Arrested In Paris

BBC NEWS | Europe | French far-right leader sentenced

Quote:
"French far-right politician Jean-Marie Le Pen has been given a three-month suspended jail term for playing down the Nazi occupation of France.
Le Pen, who was also fined 10,000 euros (£7,400), described the occupation as "not especially inhumane".

Le Pen, 79, is the leader of the French far-right party, the National Front.

He reached a surprise second-place finish in the 2002 French presidential election, after beating the socialist candidate in the first round.

Le Pen's remarks were made in an interview with the far-right magazine Rivarol in January 2005.

Elsewhere in the article he described the 1944 massacre of 86 people in the town of Villeneve d'Ascq as the actions of a junior officer "mad with rage", and praised the Gestapo for its role in the incident.

The French court ruled that Le Pen had denied a crime against humanity and had been complicit in condoning war crimes.

This is not the first time that Le Pen has faced legal sanctions for making controversial comments about the actions of the Nazis.

In 1987 he was fined for describing the Nazi gas chambers as a "detail of history".

I hate this scumbag sooooo much - he's an utterly sick revisionalist Nazi, long may he rot.

I love Europe.

"You want to talk about fascism? I'LL SHOW YOU FASCISM!"

Arresting someone for an opinion? What a pile of dickknobs.

Try being a Holocaust Denier. Academics who have strayed from the 'official line' on WW2 have been jailed, losing their jobs and their reputations.

Crooks, no one's denying that Le Pen et al are dickywackers, but if you're going to give people jail sentences for having crap opinions, how about locking up someone like Al Gore for a change?

I'm all for it - put Le Pen in a cell WITH Gore, and make a Big Brotheresque TV show about it.

Don't pretend you wouldn't watch it.

I'd also add I'm thrilled he'll be in jail when we're (Ireland) voting on the EU reform treaty - rumours have gone round that he was planning on attending a conference in Dublin to drum up support for the NO vote.

Speaking as someone campaigning on the NO side, nothing would give our Europhile government more scaremongering points about passing it than the original Frog Fascist sharing a platform with genuine people who oppose it for genuine reasons - the man's a liability, people recoil from him instinctively.

You are EXACTLY the type of guy that will make a new Reich not only possible but likely. You simply do not see that your joy about a differing opinion being punished makes you less safe in YOURS. Of all people, LePen's opponents should be leading the mobs into the streets to protest his arrest.

*SIGH* - time to use yer 'emphasis' trick:

Yet AGAIN, I seem to have to state - I AGREE, THE LAW IS SHYTE, BUT TALK TO THE FRENCH, IT'S THEIR LAW, NOT MINE, AND WE ALL KNOW THE FRENCH HAVE DEMOCRACY PROBLEMS, NONE OF WHICH THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION WANTS TO ADDRESS DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT GOT THEM INTO POWER.

That doesn't mean I have to maintain neutrality when an idiot gets his just desserts .

And you can blahdiblah about the attitude of supporting his jailers and liberty and the European populace being like sheep and whatever, but to be quite frank, I don't care - start a petition if it means that much to you - I'm not trying to defend the law that put him there, but I fully confess I'm happy he IS there.

Much & all as I enjoy seeing scum like Le Pen in jail, I continue to be DEEPLY disturbed by any nation that makes unpleasant or unpopular opinions grounds for criminal prosecution.

I don't want governments telling me what it is acceptable to think or say. I certainly don't want them telling me what is the acceptable version of history.

This may only be the first few centimetres of the slippery slope, but is an inch too far for me.

Oh, and it makes a martyr out of someone who should just be shunned.

Bigfella, that's two conservatives agreeing with you, the socialist credibility is slipping, I'm worried you might be a tory in drag.
