13 year old girl hurl missiles

No freaking way!!

Quote:
LARAMIE, Wyo. — Three 13-year-old girls accused of throwing french fries during lunchtime at their school were cited for "hurling missiles," an adult infraction covered by city ordinances.

The principal of Laramie Junior High and a police officer had warned students during an assembly the day before the french fries' launch that if they threw food, they had to suffer the consequences, Police Chief Bob Deutsch said. The warning came after school officials had heard rumors of an impending food fight.

"They saw it as really the planning of a riot, when you think about it," Deutsch said.

The girls decided to test the warning, he said.

"It wasn't a spontaneous thing -- a couple of kids giggling, throwing a french fry at each other," Deutsch said. "They intended on getting everybody involved in this and starting something that no doubt would have the potential of getting out of control."

Now, some observers are saying police and school officials went overboard, and even the American Civil Liberties Union weighed in.

"It certainly seems that this was an overreaction to a situation that could have been handled differently," said Linda Burt, Wyoming director of the ACLU.

The girls were also suspended for three days.

City prosecutor Ashley Castor didn't return phone messages left Thursday and Friday. Principal Steve Hoff declined to comment, and schools Superintendent Brian Recht did not return messages.

There was adequate warning. They wanted to test the "consequence" and they found out what it is. Let that be a lesson to those kids.

We had a few massive foodfights in high school. They'd put out leftovers on a table in the cafeteria. When I was a junior, I flung a slice of cold pizza backwards while seated and it hit a sophomore... started a small war.

This explains Putin's fears over the missile shield being installed in Europe.

I understand that a errant french-fry can poke out an eye. Let this be a warning to all - eat those fries and save eyes.

Can I assume that NON of the "adults in Authority" ever ever as kids themselves( I presume they were, at one time, kids themselves) though that is doubtful..threw an item of food, or other "missile!!" whilst in school, college or university..If they say NO, I will fly over there and call them a liar to their faces. I am not surprised that any person in (it grieves me to say it) authority declined to comment. The lunatics have taking over the asylum

That's not the point. The point is the school gave adequate warnings of what would happen. The kids wanted to test that.

If I were the teacher/principle, I wouldn't say you get detention (or whatever) if you throw a french fry. I'd treat each on a case by case basis. I may just allow the kids to have a food fight and then make them clean up before they go home. No clean up, no go home.

ITS A FRY!

If they wanted to suspend the girls for starting the food fight then fine. But to get the police involved and accuse them of "hurling missiles" (which is an "adult infraction" covered by city ordinances - a CRIME!!) C'MON!!

Suspension might have been a little overboard. Detention would have fit the crime, along with scraping the gum from under all the tables in the cafeteria!

It's embarrassing!

Hi, all- (I love all your comments, like, "it's a freakin' french fry"))

I live and work in Laramie, Wyoming and I am embarassed that our police chief could actually defend the actions of the his school cops and the school district. Reason and sanity have flown right out the window, along with the hurled missiles. The sad part about this is that one of the girls already pleaded guilty and paid the fine. I hope the other ones will hold out. Remember, they also got three days suspension! That was punishment enough, but the police were mad so they imposed criminal charges. So what if the cops warned the girls, that still doesn't make it a crime to throw French fries! And just so you know, there was no food fight.

You might want to check out the message board: Laramie Wyoming's Interactive Community Web Site.. Folks there think it's a crock as well.

i,m with you on this one, sounds like disrespecting the rules of the house.
even if they blew up chem lab by accedent i wouldn,t be hard on them, but knowingly braking rules, for the only reason, just to brake them, is more serious.
