The Garden

We have had a very mild winter so far. Primroses appeared on New Years eve. Our camelias are in blossom, snowdrops, daffodils and crocuses are in abundance. Even the magnolia buds look ready to open.

I love gardening and got into it in Amsterdam of all places. I worked in a museum there tending the garden and it turns out I love it!

I even have an idea for a business in it at home. I can keep rare plants in a greenhouse in my backyard and transplant them. Best thing is if no one wants to buy them I have the joy of having them in my own garden.

Funny how I used to hate helping my mother in the garden (pulling damn weeds) to now at 28, I want to buy a place with land so I can have a garden myself. Oh and a mini ramp to skate on. My BBQ's will rock, pretty garden, beer, mini half pipe and my good buddies!

Already have a bit of equity built up on my flat here in Australia so I hope to access that and get a place in Canada next winter. This buys me time to recover finacially and get planting for spring!

I want an English style one, lots of colour and so much in there that you can't see the weeds anyway. I'm jealous Glyn.

What did you use if anything to protect them over the winter? Did you wrap them in plastic?

No, no. My garden is on a 'benign neglect' regime. Things have to fend for themselves. I am lucky in that the climate where I live is the mildest in the UK. I have palm trees in my garden, and in the nearby town there is even a (solitary) banana tree!

It spiked to 45 degrees F here today. Wednesday it will be -5 degrees F.

Pretty mild for Minnesota in late January.

Ahh right right, should have noticed the Cornish Flag and that it says you are in Penzance. Nice area of the world, I lived and worked in Newquay. Really pretty place to live mate.

Dale, want to trade? Australia is hot right now and I hate it.

The bonus of the heat for later is that when I have property here I can put in a mediteranian garden, fig trees and grapes and other shade giving plants. I watch this Greek garden show here all the time and am getting lots of tips on caring for those types of plants.

I am hoping I can breed some in Vancouver, I'll just have to wrap them every winter and cut them back so they don't die.

No thanks, Expat. I actually really like the weather here. Every 6 months there is a one hundred degree (F) shift in temp. That's weather, and that's not boring.

Edited- Actually it's already down to -2 today.

Now the cherry trees are blossoming. If this is global warming then I'm all for it!

We were spoiled with 50+ degree temps yesterday, and it's supposed to go back to the 20's this weekend.

We average around 55 to 65 F during daytime highs and down to 40 to 50 F for overnight lows. About normal for us.

Yesterday in the bright sunshine I saw the first butterfly ( a red admiral) and the first bumblebee of the year. Unfortunately the meteorological office is predicting a cold snap by the week end so my welcome visitors are likely to be killed off.
