Yeah.. crush coal and pump it into your everyday SUV. That should solve the dependence on arab-cartelized oil.

Get back to me when India and China are willing to pay for Kyoto.
Not only that, we need to pump as much greenhouse gases into the atmosphere to counter global cooling.

I don't think that'll matter. The earth has gone through a number of ice ages before and it didn't matter what the atmospheric content was. The earth will warm up and the earth will cool down. There's nothing much we can do about it. We're just along for the ride.

That technollogy is being worked on ... as we speak. and yes, It will work. Coal "dust" runs a number(turbines) of major electricity generation plants in Colorado alone. Now. And we aren't running out of coal.

i wouldn,t recomend it, even thow it burns clean(much less airborne particles, but you still have ash. plus compression isn,t something that works good with coal powder. plus ignition problems i would suspect.
some ww2 torpedos, had turbine engines that were powered by solid propelant, it worked, as long as you don,t reuse it. iirc it was soviet experimental ones. read it in a book long time ago.

I'm going to guess that there is no SINGLE solution. My bet would be, Oil prices will climb to the point that Many other options gain traction ... It will be uncomfortable. But I doubt we'll be returning to horse and cart ... sticks and rocks yes ... but thats another thread.

Doesn't Russia have enormous reserves of oil? Is she a part of OPEC? What about Canada's oil reserves in Alberta?

That is incorrect on so many different levels. The science behind what drives a jet engine is compeletely different from the one that run turbines in a coal-dust fired plant. Except for using coal dust there is nothing remarkable about that technology : coal is burnt to generate heat, heat turns water to steam, steam turns turbines blades, turbines produce electricity. Burn coal as you may wish, you'd still be left with CO, CO2 emissions and ash.
