Santa Nailed To a Cross

Quote:
Art Conrad has an issue with the commercialism of Christmas, and his protest has gone way beyond just shunning the malls or turning off his television.

The US resident nailed Santa Claus to a 4.5 crucifix in front of his house in Bremerton, in Washington state on the US Pacific coast.

"Santa has been perverted from who he started out to be," Conrad said. "Now he's the person being used by corporations to get us to buy more stuff."

A photo of the crucified Santa adorns Conrad's Christmas cards, with the message "Santa died for your MasterCard".

The display is also Conrad's way of poking fun at political correctness. He believes people do not express their feelings because they are afraid of what others might think.

His neighbours found the will to express their feelings this past week. Some were offended but many were just curious.

Jake Tally walked by and chuckled, but did not pretend to understand the message.

"I don't really know what to think. I know it's about God but Santa has nothing to do with it," he told the Kitsap Sun newspaper.

I'd like to say I understand the guy and why he is apparently so upset over people celebrating a holiday without knowing its true meaning, but I dont. People do this ALL THE TIME! I dont see it as any different than the people who are not Irish, have never been Irish and who never will be Irish going on out St Patricks day for a green beer. Or the people who attend or throw Cindo de Mayo parties without knowing the true celebratory meaning behind the holiday. Its America and we like to celebrate and we like to have parties and have fun.

To some people Christmas is a time to splurge and do things (and yes, but things) for ourselves and for other people that we would not have normally done. A time to think about what other people in our lives would like and do that for them. During the year so many of us get busy with our jobs, family and lives and we get caught up in ourselves, that this is a time that we are almost forced to think of others. It is sad that it takes Santa, but at least we do it.

I think the guy with the santa nailed to the cross needs to calm down a bit and just enjoy the joy around him.

Well, he's making a point and he's making people think. I think there are a number of lessons that can be drawn from this episode.

Some years ago I built a small Gallows with a hanged Weihnachtsmann (our santa claus, more or less) for school. We got told to built some Christmas decoration for the classrooms. The reason for my work had less to do disliking christmas, but the teacher who got os this assignment had been ill for 2 weeks and we missed many important lessons, in year which end with a final exam which pretty much decides what chances we have to go any university. So instead of trying to make some of the lost time up, were are supposed to cut out stars and decorate the windows...

To my suprise most teacher liked my hangman and even complained last year when I forget him to bring back to school at the start of the Christmas time.
