Still reading it actually. Within the last 2 months I've been buying books like crazy.
When I was up in Chicago with THL a few weeks ago, we went to a discount book store and I went a little nuts....then we stopped at B&N and I....went a little nuts.
My suitcase felt like I was trying to smuggle gold bullion back to Fort Myers

Long story short, I'm reading something like 5 different books at once right now...

I will say that thus far into the book, Gunny Hathcock is an extremely "readable" person, so to speak.

Apparently quitting smoking has freed up money to be used in other endeavors, like books. So what are the titles of the books you're reading at this time? Do you have enough money to buy all your girlfriends Valentine Days gifts?

Just picked up "Sea of Thunder, Four Commanders and the Last Great Naval Campaign 1941-1945" by Evan Thomas. Very good book so far.

A lot of us who worked in "Production" referred to the Missouri as the "Misery." Sure, they're nice to look at when they're clean and operating, but during long overhauls when you're spending 12 hours a day, 7 days a week on the thing, it's not very appealing. On a regular day, as a "Production" worker, you had to be on board at 7:30, didn't get to leave for lunch until 11:30, back on board at 12:10, then only got to leave the ship the last 10 minutes of the day to clean up before going home. When you left the ship to get materials, you could grab a cup of coffee but you had to get back on board as soon as possible. Once a week, production stopped for "field day" to clean up the ship. My group had to clean up Broadway, removing anything that wasn't supposed to be there, including large valves and boiler parts. The electronic pukes, bldg 300 people and bums would sneak back off to their shops so they wouldn't have to help out.

Oh, yes, there was the "fan room defecator" who'd take a crap in fan rooms, tanks, even go as far as smearing it on ladder rungs.

I don't think I'll be buying any BB books anytime soon.

I saw that one on Amazon, haven't decided to get it yet.

Yes, I know, working on those environmental semi-disasters would be enough to provoke feelings of bitterness from anybody...

Sorry if it didnt come out right. Its a book about the Commanders more then the ships Pal.

I did get a lump of coal last Christmas in a nice decorated brass container. It was anonymous but I quickly figured out who sent it.

I think one of the things I resented about the work on the Misery and Jersey was the "self appointed" brown nosing, upper level supervisors who took it upon themselves to make sure people were working and not screwing around. What do you say to some upper level supervisory schmuck who's telling you to get your butt on the ship at 7:30 in the morning when he's too ignorant to ask why you're already dirty due to the fact you've been there since 3:30 and it's your first coffee break?

I have to agree 100% with Salty on this one. New Jersey was tough enough but by the time Missouri came along there were far too many low and mid-level "micro-managers" that wanted to be called "Mr. Battleship".

Two shops in Production which really no one wanted to be in or around was my shop (Insulators) and Equipment Cleaners. Both shops had their share of "characters" and bums and sometimes you were just guilty by association. Even though my shop had as many as 150 bodies at the height of BB work, it seemed like it was the same 12 people or so who had current certifications to remove asbestos, which wasn't a fun job (Dick has a few pages on asbestos removal in his book, at least the earlier draft did.)
