Depends on the criteria he's using.

Start of conversion or completion of conversion?

Off the top of my head, I would say the IJN Shinano. It started off as a Yamato class Battleship but was finished up as the world's largest (at the time) Aircraft Carrier.

She didn't last too long because without her watertight integrity being completed an American submarine used her for torpedo target practice.

Oh hell!

Could that have been more obvious? I think Dread and I were fixated on the time period that Eagle was constructed.

Well, the Shinano was basically completed and was sailing under her own power. It's just that her damage control systems were not all installed yet when the USS Archerfish happened upon her.

I guess it's my turn to ask a trivia question. When we (LBNSY) were tasked to reactivate the Iowa class Battleships in the 1980's we were provided with all Battleship drawings and microfilm reels in existence. One set of microfilm reels was of the USS North Carolina. I copied some of them and sent them to the North Carolina museum.

Because they showed: What kind of turrets and guns she was ORIGINALLY designed to carry.

Let's see if I remember my Friedman's without looking at it....

Twelve 14-inch guns in 3 quad turrets.

From what I have read 14" to 16" during the design phase and the very first USN ship to have two forward and one aft in the main turret set up and the secondary armament in turrets. But supposedly too late in the making to modify certain other details.

Shinano was indeed the last BB to be converted to a CV.

I'm with TH on this one, North carolina was in a sence an American version of the KGV. Where the british decided to reduce the number of guns and add additional armour the U.S. decided to upsize the main gun caliber.

Its also interesting to note that some 19 sketch designs were made of the design with guns ranging from 14" to 16".

Wow, any pictures in your personal library that we might be able to see?

I'm afraid not. All the drawings were on 35mm film and the copies I made (or had one of my workers clandestinely make them) were not of good quality. I had our reproduction department enlarge them and I sent them all to the North Carolina ship museum.

But they were fun to look at though we felt the museum would have better use of them since we were just starting designs to reactivate the Iowas. We had no time or space to keep them around.
