Now where is the sense in saying 'i can crew 3 burkes for the manpower of an Iowa', when it costs more than 3x as much money to buy three burkes to begin with.

Jesus man, just how much ARE you paying your crewmen that you figure that'd save you any money? Not to mention that the Burkes- damned fine ships that they may be- are not exactly what i'd call sterling NGFS ships either. Neither would anyone who's sane.

And again, if the Iowas did ever come back into service, we all know that it would be with a greatly reduced crew. As i said, the 5"/38s wouldn't be coming back with them, and they have huge manning requirements. Just that one change alone would reduce crew size by 15 or so %.

But whatever, they're not coming back regardless.

Such a shame to see ships with such overwhelming upgrade potential and 30+ years of operational hull life left get tossed into the scrap heap of history, but hey, i'm not in charge. The navy would be a much different animal if i was...

    "I meant Have Nap"

Don't think the USAF uses that weapon anymore(or more correctly, we used them all up, and never bought more). Have Nap was never intended as more than an interim weapon, and is quite unsuitable for direct support fire in any case.

Rick, i don't care where they keep the Iowa, as long as it's kept up to Cat B standards.

And seriously, the navy HAS been completely dishonest in the entire NGFS debacle to date....so i can hardly blame USNFSA for publicly stating so. I've seen Kelly Johnson make the same sorts of comments about the Navy, and lord knows that man has done as much for the defense of the United States of America as any man who's ever lived.

    (gun Grape)

i wsn't talking about buying 3 new burkes. I was discussing manpower. 3 crews worth for Burkes, means that Burkes would go to sea at full compliment. Not having 15-20 leaving in Rota after translant. Then more in Naples and so forth. Or able to stand more than a 2-3 watch bill. vice being sucked off to a ship that would hardly ever deploy

    One more time ...

Sorry to those already (over ) familiar with the following:

Orbital assests notwithstanding, there are only two weapons with greater projection of force than a BB. Sex and Cash. Methinks DC is ammenable to either. The use of said primary toys is the way to get some of these extra-ordinary ships enforcing any pax americana. Capital thought eh?

Well it's recorded history that the North Vietnamese pulled out of peace talks and demanded that the USS new jersey stop raping and pillaging the N. Vietnamese countryside before they would resume negotiations.

It's also no coincidence that during the tanker war when an Iowa entered the Gulf the entire region went immediately quiet for the duration of the BBs stay.

No one in their right mind wants an all but inpenetrable steel behemoth pouring 2000lb projectiles at anything worth blasting within 20 miles of their coastline(and they'd want to face one that deposits 1200lb shells 90 miles inland with GPS precision even less, i assure you).

    Gee, i wonder why...

The sheer noise of incoming rounds scaring the enemy is enough reason to keep the Iowa's. "Theres no train station nearby is there?....uh oh..."

Another scary thought if your on the opposing side is that once the guns fire you have exactly 60 seconds at maximum range to be gone unless you like being at the foot of a 200 foot diameter crater thats also 20-30 feet deep....59..58..57

    Gee, i wonder why...

Could it be because most country's with coastline have a disproportionate fraction of their economic and transport assets well within 16-inch gun range?
Not to mention whatever naval forces and infrastructure that might be sitting there like an overripe plum to be plucked

That is without a doubt one of the coolest shots of an Iowa i've ever seen.
