    Combat engagement center

After reading _Battleship New Jersey_ I was surprised to find out that a Combat Engagement Center was created from the flag quarters, and the original Combat Information Center inside the citadel was relegated to backup.

Was the space really so constrained that it had to be relocated outside of the citadel? What measures were taken to protect the new CEC?

having taken a tour of the Missouri in Pearl Harbor, not much was done too protect it.. I guess the idea of slugging it out with another BB was done when it was converted.. (should have been, since there were no other BB's on earth besides her sister ships)

Actually the original CIC (Combat INFORMATION Center) was, and still is, down on the first platform within the main armored box of the hull.

The reason why we had to move up to the 02 level for the Combat ENGAGEMENT Center was necessary for several reasons. The most critical was to shorten lengths of waveguides and Coax cables to the modern electronic consoles. Secondly it gave faster access to the Captain and Weapons officers.

And it was not totally unprotected. I personally designed 1 1/2" thick HY-80 armor plate all around the sides and the top with 1" thick armor on the deck over the Captain's cabin.

Basically this was officially called maximum FRAGMENTATION PROTECTION. Though in reality it could stop 40mm. The armor mods was more concerned with severe fragmentation damage caused by near misses and (especiall) anti-ship missiles blown up by the Close In Weapons System.
Able to leap tall tales in a single groan.
