Interesting discussion. I don't see how the battleship can be revived, especially as military thinking is now aiming at quality rather than quantity of firepower. In order for a battleship to have 16" or 18" main armament, secondary guns, enough missiles and anti-aircraft weaponry to repel a heavy aerial attack, and strong armour to resist both aerial and seaborne attacks, together with capacity for huge ammunition stocks and living space for the crew, it would have to be as big as a floating city! The cost of such a monster would be absolutely mind boggling, and even such a beast could be destroyed by a nuclear warhead, for which there is no protection.

So you are stating that the SeaSprite is not embarked upon the Iowas?

The Seaspite was embarked for primary two reasons:

Supply transfer and mid course correction for the RGM-109 Harpoon missles.

Directly from the website was embarked upon the Iowa class.

How big was the AIMD shop on the Iowas? Where are the extra parts stored (rotor blades, engines) and where do you perform maintenance on the things?

I did drop the ball on the fuel tanks. (and I knew better, must be getting old).

But I will say that the Iowas helos were about as effective as the Trenton when we embarked a pair of Harriers. Very dependent on other ships to maintain the capability.

So you state that lets say 20 jets fire (unknown amount of missles) upon the DD at max range that DD is not going to get hit several times? IMO it would be very nice to think it wouldnt but doubtfull that it would escape unscathed pending the amount of missles launched. I take nothing away from the DD but the odds dont favor a single DD against X amount of missle coming at her and more then likely from various angles and ranges. Lets just esimate at four missles each jet.

Then really the only combo that would have a chance would be Backfires with LR AS-16s. And I'm thinking that is exactly what Aegis was designed to combat. So yes. Between various electronic systems, ship "Stealth", and a combo of SM-2, ESSM quad packs and RAM.

Would it surprise you that a CV leaving Norfolk on a Tiger "day cruise" would carry two submerged subs along with it? I do have proof of this from just last summer.

Would it surprise me that 2 subs were assigned to the CV for a tiger cruise? Hell yes.

Especially when half of the CBGs don't have a sub assigned. Look up the OoB for the groups that have been deployed to the Persian Gulf the last few years.. And check the navy periodicals. Even those with SSNs assigned are having the SSNs pulled once in theater for various "Outside" taskings.

Nixie isn't a ASW system. And a helo with sonobuoys wont know where to search since there is no sonar to direct it.

And this would be worth the loss of your sub and a few billion dollars plus multiple strikes upon your country for torpedoing (if) a USN ship? And your country in ruins live on the aformentioned CNN?

Yes. We have to quit falling back on the "Sink our ship and we will blow hell out of you" line of "Why it will never happen.

How do you know who to "Blow up"? assuming that we are not at war. And if we are already at war, or about to go to war then the country is going to be bombed any way. So hell yes I'm going to sink that big fat target.

How popular would you be then with your civilian population
when there is no power light,heat,gas and your infastructure grinds to a halt? IMO not very popular indeed.

Well since I'm already at war with the US, the population probably doesn't have those things any way. This will be a boost. Like Sinking the Bismark!
