As a civilian that's never been on a man-o-war before, that sucker was as impressive as hell!

You feel so small when standing next to those big guns.

But the ship did look dated.
About the only thing that was younger than me was the phalanex on the port side of the ship.

If Im not mistaken New Jersey (BB62) is the only Iowa class battleship that retains all four Phalanx CIWS cannons onboard. The others from what Ive seen only carry two. Possibly removed during homeporting or after their last decom.

"My" F-117 pilot on the retirement status of the "Black jets":

The basics are that the planes are being phased out over the next 1.5 years, and that the F-22 will be coming to Holloman.

One thing that is for sure, there are a TON of aviation museums, airports, bases, and cities vying for a 117 for static display. At least a good few will be going towards one of these, especially the only two planes that have taken part in each of the 4 major operations where the 117 has taken part: Just Cause, Desert Storm, Allied Force, and Iraqi Freedom."

I wonder if the CV Intrepid will add one to her carrier deck after she comes out of drydock in the next few years. It will be there for a few months for hull work and painting from what I understand. She already has several jets on static display including a Concord SST and an SR-71 Blackbird.

I'm sure if the Intrepid can fit one it'll have one. Probably the Smithsonian too.

The F-117 is quite the historic airplane.

Definately worth the drive to New York to see it. Im hoping to get there before she goes to drydock which will be not to far away.

Its the only plane I've even seen at an airshow complete with its own armed guard and perimiter fence while on static display!

    Dread,
Do you have any info about Intrepid going to drydock?

Edit: Never mind, it's all over the web

Well TH from what they say her hull isint doing so well from sitting in the silt laiden berth she is in presently. Supposedly because of poor water movement below the hull line it is allowing silt to build up and cushion the ship against the river bed. With the hull sitting in the silt it is accelerating deterioration of the hull itself. From what I understand she will be leaving for drydock in the next year but this is only from what the grape vine carries.

The New Jersey normally has between 6-8 feet of water under the keel at all times and is positioned at an angle so that the Delaware river current provides a sweeping effect under the hull so silt cannot gather at the keel. From what Im told this has been pretty sucessful at keeping the keel clean of debris/silt thus far.

Yeah, she's been there for a loooong time.

Edit: By the way, as promised, I've pruned off the discussion I was having with Shipwreck so as not to clutter the thread.

So, anyone have an idea what the cost of drydocking and maintenace of the Intrepid would be? There's a very good chance that at least the primer and maybe the outside coat of paint is lead based. The EPA usually has a problem with blasting lead based paint so that it becomes friable.

IMO 4-6 million to cover most costs.

Storage and removal (All aircraft on deck etc)
    Towing to and from drydock
Drydock charge costs at Yard base rate.
    Cleaning
    Stripping etc.
    Replacement materials
    Primer
    Paint
    Final cleaning
    Permits/Fines etc.

Im sure there will be several misc costs associated with this project as well.

Yeah, the EPA can be a big problem. Remember the sand blasting machine we had in our dry docks? It had a big rubber boot around it and vacuumed up the grit as well as any nasty old paint such as red lead and yellow chromate.

Before that, we just let the Santa Ana winds carry the dust where ever it wanted.

I'd have to believe that the regulations have gotten more strict over the years. In 1991, the John Young came in and they found that a contractor had painted the bilges in the after main machinery space with real red lead. We had to treat it like an asbestos removal, complete with changing rooms, Tyvex coveralls and air-fed respirators. They wouldn't allow grinding or sanding, the stuff had to be taken off with needle guns.

Well see when Intepid goes to drydock. Or perhaps when KittyHawk retires from active service. I would say there is a good chance she too will become a museum.
