    The S.S. Santa
December 20, 2005 - No doubt, every child at one point has looked to the sky to see if reindeer really can fly. But, I'll bet you didn't know that they can't swim. That's why Santa has traded in his sleigh today for a big, green tugboat.

Santa went boating down the Delaware River today bringing holiday cheer to hundreds of sailors who won't be home with their families.
They work on big ships, thousands of miles from home. They come from all over the world, but they can't get off the ships to go shopping. So, Santa went shopping for them.

Just one problem: They have smokestacks, but no chimneys.

So, the sailors lowered down ropes.

Santa and his helpers first sent up a bucket full of candy canes. And then, up went a sack full of ditty bags. The goodies were provided by the Seaman's Church Institute.

And the sailors remember the kindness with friendly waves and thanks.

Santa was riding on Jupiter, a historic tugboat built in Philadelphia 103 years ago. Jupiter is owned by the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild.

They jumped at the chance when they got an email from the North Pole.

Santa and Mrs. Claus and all their helpers worked quickly, bringing smiles and friendly waves from the ships they visited.

So you see, Santa never forgets anyone, not even the sailors at sea. And now you know, instead of just nine reindeer, he actually has 10.

Jupiter and her sisters on the Delaware. A very familiar looking Tug to those of us that see the river alot. :)
