CRPF to undertake air surveillance: DIG

    MOUNT ABU, AUG 15 (PTI)
The Central Reserve Police Force would soon undertake air surveillance in the states affected by terrorism and Maoist extremism, its Additional Deputy Inpsector General M P Nathanael said today.

Along with the expansion and modernisation of the CRPF, eight helicopters have also been purchased for surveillance, Nathanael told trainees and officers on the occasion of Independence Day parade after unfurling the National Flag here.

The CRPF would also soon have a water wing, and satellite telephones were being procured for further enhancing the communication network of the force, he said.

All static formations have been computerised thereby speeding up communication between all formations, the DIG said.

A counter-insurgency and anti-terrorist school has been established at Silichar (Assam) to impart specialised training to force personnel for dealing with insurgency in the north-eastern states, he said.

There was a proposal to set up another school on similar lines in Jammu to impart training to deal with militants in Jammu and Kashmir, he said.

The ever-increasing threat to the internal security of the country has resulted in rapid expansion of the force in recent years, he said.

Raised as the Crown Representative's Police at Neemuch (Madhya Pradesh) in July 1939, its strength rose to 60 battalions by 1971. The decades of 1980s saw as many as 41 more battalions added to the force. Rapid expansion thereafter has raised its present strength to 176 battalions.
