NEW YORK: Pakistan hid Osama Bin Laden from the United States in one of its military camps in 1998 after a US missile strike failed to kill the militant leader, according to a new book. The cruise missile barrage hit Bin Laden’s mountainous camp just hours after he had left.
In days after the strike, it was unclear whether Bin Laden had survived. During that time, Pakistan spirited him across the rugged border to one of its military camps, Kathy Gannon writes in “I Is for Infidel,” due out next month.
“Dozens of four-by-four trucks took Bin Laden and a small army of Arab fighters to a Pakistani army commando training camp at Cheenot in northwest Pakistan,” Gannon reports.
When the US told Afghanistan’s Taliban chieftain Mulla Muhammad Omar to get rid of Bin Laden, Omar insisted he didn’ know where Bin Laden was. “In fact, Mulla Omar, Pakistan and Bin Laden had carried out an elaborate game of hide-and-seek to keep the United States off balance, pretending Bin Laden was missing while hiding him in Pakistan,” Gannon claims
