The court martial of a Major of 30 Rashtriya Rifles, involved in the rape of a woman and her daughter in Kupwara district triggered street protests in Kashmir valley. To hoodwink the world, the Indian Army had to dismiss a jawan from service and award vigorous imprisonment of one year for raping a 60-years-old woman in IHK last year.
In another case, Indian Army persons raped a woman namely Hakeem Jan in Sheikhpora (IHK). An FIR was lodged against Kishan Bahadur of 3 Rashtriya Rifles. Residents of Sallar village held protest demonstrations against the alleged rape of Hakeem Jan. On Nov 4, 2004 a nineteen year-old-girl lodged a complaint that she was gang raped by Indian Army persons in Anantnag but nobody paid any heed.

According to the Kashmiri-Canadian Council, more than 6,300 Kashmiri women have been raped.
And a report by Human Rights Watch 2001, say; “Rape is used by the Indian Security Forces to attack Kashmiri women suspected of sympathizing with Freedom Fighters.”
Through rape, the Security Forces are aiming to punish and humiliate the entire community. The Amnesty International report 2004 maintained that specific targeting of Muslim women in India remains unacknowledged by the State government and criminal justice system.
Witnesses report that a large number of women are beaten, stripped naked, gang raped and stabbed. Amnesty International remained disturbed as civilians in 2004 continued to be a target of gross human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir and scores of allegations of human rights violations were made against Security Forces, paramilitary forces.
Extrajudicial killings, rapes, custodial killings, kidnappings, burning of houses by Indian Security Forces within IHK remain a common practice. The whole IHK has risen against the Indian Army and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act AFSPA that enables the Indian Army to arrest and kill anyone, anytime.
