  • Which ship should have been preserved.

Inspired by the America thread, heres is my list of ships which should have been preserved for posterity.

BTW only ships from an age which such ideas were known, otherwisew we would hve votes fo Santa Maria.

    My humble list

    1) USS Enterprise (CV-6), bloody disgrace her fate, for such a great carrier.
    2) USS Essex (CV-9) ditto.
    3) HMS Warspite, been nice to have had a ship from Jutland still around (not a battle she wuld like to remember though.)
    4) USS Kearsarge of Alabama fame.

Well Spartan I do know that even before the Bikini Tests that both Pennsylvania (bb38) and New York (bb34) wanted they're state named battleships so badly that they challenged the government based on the fact that Texas was able to preserved by her home state. Pennsylvania had good reason for wanting her as (1) her sister the Arizona (bb39) met her demise at Pearl and went on to become an American Icon. (2) Pennsylvania was the flagship at Pearl. Unfortunately as this debate was going on so were the Bikini tests and we all know what shape they were in afterwards. All deemed to "hot" by the scientists that borded them shortly there afterwards. Some were used for target practice some for radiological studies the rest scrapped or sunk off of Bikini. A gentleman on the Pennsy website Ed Spilman actually took the sailors out to Pennsy and opened her sea cocks and watch her sink. An unfitting end to such a gallant ship. P.S. she dont look to bad for a ship over 35 years old and surviving two bomb blasts does she?

You cannot preserve all ships, but yes, its seem that battle-wagon deserved yo be saved. However it is a lot better than the scarp yard. At least she is at sea.

I know it's not in the same league and she was only a collier but the Endeavor, currently believed to lie at Rhode Island.

I would go with any of the WWII heavy Aircraft Carriers, e.g. Essex, Enterprise, Ticonderoga, etc...

Along with some of the above, I would have liked to have seen one of the Japanese battleships or cruisers captured and later sunk after WWII. Other possibilities were USS Tennessee, USS Oriskany CV34, and one or two four-piper flush deck destroyers.

I do know that after wwII and before the Bikini Tests that we had the german cruiser Prince Eugen here in Philly Naval Yard to disassemble her and examine the turrents, gears and so forth before she was "re" crewed with US naval men for the trip back to Bikinni Atoll to participate in the Bomb experiments. I found these pictures of her. The first is german crew being offloaded in Boston. The second is her turrents being disassembled here at Philly Navy Yard for inspection and the third is the last time she was even seen under her own power again taken from one of our escort DD'S on the way to Bikini.
