BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) " Opposition candidate Mauricio Macri won Argentina's presidential election on Sunday, marking an end to the left-leaning and often-combative era of President Cristina Fernandez, who along with her late husband dominated the country's political scene for 12 years and rewrote its social contract.

Ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli, Fernandez's chosen successor, conceded late Sunday and said he had called Macri to congratulate him on a victory that promises to chart Argentina on a more free market, less state interventionist course.

"Today is a historic day," said Macri, addressing thousands of cheering supporters as horns were heard blaring across Buenos Aires. "It's the changing of an era."

With 96 percent of the vote counted, Macri had 52 percent support compared to 48 percent for Scioli.
Well there's a relief, maybe they can stop going bankrupt every decade or so

Things aren't looking good for the long term leftist regime in Venezuela either with elections coming up and right wing parties clearly well ahead in terms of popularity. Going to very hard for the incumbents to 'game the result' this time around and make the result look believable even just for domestic consumption.

People do get that Kirchner is from the right-side edge of Argentine politics, right?
(and that Macri competed against the Peronist party - from its right edge)

Ye're but Peronism leans heavily towards a 'social justice' platform i.e. lots of state intervention, social equality programs (often in the form of expensive subsidies) and government ownership of key industry sectors all dressed up as 'Nationalism' which you don't tend to see much of in modern right wing parties. Same breed of dog as socialism just different colored fur.
