The ship INS MAGAR of the Indian Navy on Friday docked at a port in Ho Chi Minh City for a five-day visit.

During its stay from June 9-13, the ship's officers will lay a wreath at the Monument dedicated to President Ho Chi Minh, pay a courtesy visit to the municipal People's Committee leaders, the Command of Military Zone 7, and representatives of the Command of the Vietnam People's Navy.

On this occasion, officers and sailors from the ship will hold a friendly volleyball match with those from the Vietnam Navy Command, tour of the city, and take part in other social activities.

India to supply spares to Vietnamese navy (http://news.webindia123.com/news/showdetails.asp?id=86405&cat=India)

New Delhi | June 07, 2005 4:43:22 PM IST

New Delhi, June 7 : India will supply to Vietnam's navy much-needed spares for its Russian-made warships as part of its efforts to step up maritime cooperation with countries of the Indian Ocean region.

"As part of enhanced maritime cooperation between the two countries, INS Magar, an amphibious ship, will carry a shipment of 900 boxes weighing 150 tonnes of Petya and missile boat spares for the Vietnamese navy," navy spokesman Lieutenant Commander Balbir Singh said here Tuesday.

The supply of the spares had been agreed to during the visit of Vietnam's Defence Minister Pham Van Tra to India in March.

Indian Navy officials said Vietnam was an important part of India's extended maritime neighbourhood and bilateral relations had gone from strength to strength in recent years.

This has been the result of positive initiatives from both the sides and a "realisation of the mutual benefits that can accrue through enhanced interaction between the two sides", the officials said.

"These spares will be of immense value to the Vietnamese Navy that operates a number of Russian-built Petya and OSA II-class missile boats," Singh said.

Vice Admiral O.P. Bansal, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of India's Eastern Naval Command, will be present when the spares are handed over to the Vietnamese navy later this week at Ho Chi Minh City.

The Indian Navy is committed to making the Indian Ocean region as well as the Asian maritime region stable and peaceful.

"India is keen that the freedom of the seas and the safety of the sea-lanes of communication are guaranteed for all nations," said Singh.

"To fulfil this commitment, the Indian Navy maintains constant vigil over its waters to stave off adversity and is continuously forging cooperative ventures with navies which could act in league for the larger common maritime good of the region and the world."

I remember that China and Vietnam are hostile to each other so India is buttering them up so that they will allow us to build a ship/sub/air base there.

Any other country worth having in the South-east Asia has already been snapped up by China, damn it x(. Anybody know the full list of countries that are co-operating with China? Any with India?

I guess you are too ignorant and full of dooms day thoeries.

Face it, India cannot have base in Vietnam or any other SEA countries. Its the same case for China as well.

Co-operation means its just cooperation, no ship/sub/air base. India and China are not US or then USSR, they have a long way to go to set up a full fledged base in another sovreign nation.

Exactly, one needn't get hyper when india sets up a base, and suffer from paranoia when china does.

The fact is that neither of it is way away from having a full fledged base anywhere.

You are missing my point. Any goodwill generated now or surveillance bases setup will be most useful in the future for whichever country is lucky enough to win these privileges.

A full-fledged Indian military base may not come until 2050 or even later, but the building blocks are laid today, in the here and now, and they will have an impact on future negotiations for military bases or leases for property.

I don't care about having a full-scale military base in Vietnam today. What would be the point? Why go through all the expense? So we can kill the evil, invading Singaporeans? No. The point is building rapport with these nations, slowly obtaining the rights to build surveillance bases, and then moving on to bigger fish like massive assault bases in 2050 or 2100 when it matters.

I doubt Vietnam would just lend us a base in 2100 if we suddenly asked them out of the blue. We have to have a history of good relations with these nations before they will be so kind as to help us out militarily. Today, Now, Here is when we begin the establishment of these relations.

An agreement to co-operate or build a surveillance base granted to China means that these countries have begun to lean towards China diplomatically. This might culminate in these countries being aligned with China when it matters in the far future. I might be an old man or dead then but I still wouldn't like to see that. Hence, my push to befriend these countries.

Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Brunie and Singapore. Hell all of them have good relations these days.

Oh my god they are encircling everyone!!!!!!!

Is it the illusion of power which makes you want bases in every single SE Asian nation? And it is not about being friends to get bases but giving away lots of cutting edge weapons for free as well as giving and then writing off loans. And not once but all the time.

Not adjusting for inflation but the USA gave the Philippines almost a billion dollars a year in aid and weapons in exchange for bases during the 1980s. And of course handed over extra equipment as needed.

and then moving on to bigger fish like massive assault bases in 2050 or 2100 when it matters.

These nations get along well enough with China not to dream of taking part in a war with India againist China...

Umm things have changed a lot between Vietnam and China in the last few years.

Basically there is one nation that could form an anti Chinese league in SE Asia and that is the USA.

Rani,

You're grasping at straws that hasn't even grown yet. 50 years is a long time (actually not that long), considering what I've seen over my life time, I could not have predicted half the stuff I've seen - man landing on the moon, the end of the Vietnam War, the start and end of the Soviet-Afghan War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the fall of the USSR, the Iran-Iraq War, the Kuwait War, the Yugoslav Civil Wars, 11 September, the Taliban War, the Iraq War. I had thought that either I was going to die in a nuclear fireball at the Fulda Gap or my grandkids are taking over my job. I was wrong on both counts and I could not have predicted that that I would see combat in peacekeeping operations.

Just look to the immediate future and the future will be the future no matter how well or how poor you plan it. I can tell you one thing, it won't be anything like you imagine ... or wished ... or dread.

Rani is one of the DOOMS DAY PROPHET .

That hurts coming from you, indianguy4u . I wouldn't mind the foriegners, but from you that hurts, especially since I try to see things realistically and not doomsday like. China has good relations and bases in SE Asia and India doesn't. China is using these bases to gather intel on our military developments and is flanking India. Does India have a foreign base that's gathering intel on Chinese military developments? All these things are public knowledge. I'm not making it up, this is reality.

I wasn't really hurt, indianguy4u. But thanks. And I know that India and China will not have a conflict in the near term (as well as one can given the unpredictable nature of these things), but when the Chinese start coming so close that they can actually collect data on our weapons programmes, then you know that it is time to do something. I wasn't suggesting an invasion or anything, but we have fallen behind in economic, military and diplomatic terms you know.
