MARIGNANE, France: Further to the Civil Aviation Authorities of Nepal (CAAN) statement released from Katmandou on June 3rd, 2005, Eurocopter does confirm that its serial Ecureuil AS 350B3 did achieve the World Record performance of high altitude landing and take-off on Mount Everest (8850m) on May 14th and 15th, 2005 as per FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) standards.

Eurocopter regrets the misunderstanding with the CAAN.

Eurocopter is just such a cheezy name for a company. I'm sure the Europeans think the same thing about companies named Ameri-whatever though.

I fear Mt.Everest is loosing its respect due to the frequent climbs.Human race needs new heights to risk the life for.

its awful. covered in bodies, oxygen tanks, broken tents and the detritus of 50 years of hugely expensive fly-tipping.

if you want a challenge find an unclimbed peak - of which there are hundreds - an set a good, challenging route climbed in 'alpine' style and bring everyone, and their rubbish, home.

everest is becoming - has become - just a box on a tick-list of the rich and shameless, its now do-able by a reasonably fit walker with £20,000 to spend. a disgusting end to a beautiful showcase of natures wonder and mans spirit of adventure.

there is no climbing or mountaineering skill involved, its just a bloody hard slog complicated by the altitude and the weather. your chances of getting to the top are determined by your ability to operate in the cold and high altitude, since that is something an individual can do little about its all up to chance. serious mountaineers have failed because of the altitude while people who can't climb the most basic indoor routes have suceeded.

its like winning the lottery, there is no skill, just luck.

numerous companies in the UK operate guided trips to everest, they state that no previous mountaineering experience or skill is needed. they spend a day or so going over some basic ropework and how to use crampons and ice axe and then they push or drag you up. they don't give any guarentees about getting you to the top or getting to the bottom again, but its in their interests to get as many 'normal' people to the top as possible so as to make their expeditions more attractive.
