New James Bond film 'Skyfall' unveiled (http://news.yahoo.com/james-bond-film-skyfall-unveiled-151417411.html)

AFP – 1 hr 16 mins ago

The new James Bond film "Skyfall" was unveiled on Thursday, with Daniel Craig returning as 007, half a century after the superspy's first appearance on the silver screen.

Oscar winner Sam Mendes is directing the film, due for release in late 2012, five decades after Sean Connery first played the debonair secret agent in "Dr No", launching one of the world's most popular film franchises.

Spanish actor Javier Bardem will play the villain and Judi Dench again takes on the role of Bond's tough boss "M" and head of spy agency MI6, the film's producers told a London press conference attended by some of the stars.

British actors Ralph Fiennes and Albert Finney were also in the cast, and the "Bond girls" would be played by French actress Berenice Marlohe and British actress Naomie Harris.

Mendes reassured fans that the latest movie in the series, legendary for its fast-paced action scenes and daredevil stunts, would contain "all the elements of a classic Bond movie, including a lot of action."

In keeping with its classic formula, the movie, which is due to begin filming soon, will see the tuxedo-wearing, martini-quaffing spy getting into scrapes across the world, in London, Scotland, Shanghai and Istanbul.

The film, which will have its first release in Britain and Ireland on October 26 next year and its US release on November 9, sees the world's most famous secret agent on a mission to track down and destroy a threat to MI6.

It is Craig's third time playing Bond after the films "Casino Royale" in 2006 and "Quantum of Solace" in 2008.

Despite the huge popularity of the Bond franchise, the latest film nearly did not make it off the drawing board after studio giant MGM got into severe financial difficulties.

The project was put on ice in April last year after Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was offered for sale to resolve its debt problems and stave off bankruptcy.

But the legendary studio, with a catalogue that includes the Bond franchise as well as the "Pink Panther" and "Rocky" series, announced a debt-restructuring rescue deal late last year, paving the way for Bond's return.

MGM -- famous for its trademark roaring lion logo -- announced in October last year that its creditors had approved a reorganisation plan with US firm Spyglass Entertainment.

"It was frustrating because there was really nothing I could do about it," Craig told Thursday's press conference. "It was a financial issue and I just had to let them get on with it."

I think we need more Austin Danger Powers movies as well.

"Danger" is his middle name...

Do you guys like Daniel Craig as Bond? I much prefer Piers Brosnan after the original Sean Connery.

Craig doesn't quite do it for me, and Casino Royale and Quantom of Solace both sucked balls. Real let down

Brosnon was too much of a pretty boy and brought that atttude to the movies.

My opinion but Craig took it up a notch and is perfect for the role.

Moore, Lazenby, Dalton and Brosnon were too laid back and I always got the feeling they'd rather watch Cricket and ask people to Skype rather than kick the bad guy's ass.

i liked casino royale, quantum of solace frankly sucked.

if it's supposed to be a bond reboot, they really need to explain how the grim mr bond from casino royale turns into a rather happier individual as demonstrated by sean connery. bond is supposed to enjoy life, not just grimly bear through it.

brosnan was never shy about detesting both his character and what the character stood for, and honestly it showed after a while.

craig was the only bond after connery who can be a bastard, the rest were comedian (moore, esp. later), playboy (brosnan, and during his era the movies turned into 2 hour long commercials). imo the new casino royale was brilliant, had more suspense than last 3 bond movies together* , and completely without space stations, 3-meter tall giants etc.- one can watch bond movies and be amused by these antics, but very few can be watched separately, outside the canon

*actually i can´t even remember if i bothered seeing brosnans latest... was there something with hovercrafts and diamonds?

That was Die Another Day with Halle Berry.

I liked Piers Brosnan's Bond because he played a more suave and sophisticated guy rather than the edgy bastard. James Bond was supposed to be a cold blooded killer who hides behind a suave playboy living the good life.

Yeah but Pierce Brosnon let that communist chick kick everybody's ass while he stood by and watched helplessly.

He just watched and made the girls do all the work.

Wait...I changed my mind.

I like him the most.

Lazenby who?

Sean Connery was best with Bronson and Craig a tie for 2nd place followed by Moore and Dalton.

George Lazenby.

"On her majesty's secret service".

The second James Bond before Roger Moore. The movie where 007 gets married but his wife is killed on their way to the honeymoon.

Played Bond in that movie only.

I know. He was so bad that he should not be brought up in and Bond related discussion.

C'mon, he wasn't that bad.

I place him above Roger Moore and below Timothy Dalton.

They generally suck balls as far as films go. Stupid, meandering plots with absolutely no logic or pacing (favourite ridiculousness facepalms being the gun in Man with the golden gun and the space war in Moonraker) - the girls are a redeemer but last one I really loved was Sophie Marceau. If I had to pick one I like, it'd be one of the earlier ones with Seán Connery like Goldfinger (which were slightly less silly).

The Daniel Craig ones seem to be just a Product Placement excercise, never seen so much Sony junk, and I worked in a Sony Centre in my early 20s.

Craig's the best of them. Yes yes I know, Connery blah blah, but if you read the books Bond, while liking the women was a hard bitter bastard. Craig plays him to a tee

As much as I'd like to see Charles Bronson as 007, it was actually Pierce Brosnan who played the tuxedoed super spy.

I've found the movies where they introduce a new actor to be better than the ones that folowed though there are exceptions.

Dr.No & From russia with love had excellent pacing.

Live & let die, very nice beginning the end however was a bit silly.

Living daylights was good, the one after was not.

Goldeneye had an excellent intro, the ones after slowly lost that sheen. Judi Dench surprised me with how well she played the M character.

Casino Royale was a winner the one after not the same.

You only live twice i think is one of my favourites. That was Connery at his best, diamonds are forever & never say never were his worst. So no particular favourites as far as Bond actors are concerned, the above mentioned movies portrayed each of them very well.

Dunno about you guys but in India we've had numerous reruns of the entire series over the last cpl of years and its always nice to watch them again. imdb's trivia section is quite revealing, i'm surprised to know they've dubbed over many of the actors voices eg. from russia with love had the entire female lead's voice dubbed over.

I agree Craig is the best, but I like them all - the one with two episodes (Dalton) is my least favorite

Michelle Yeoh

False advertising. A pretty chick that won a beauty pageant and knows a few martial arts moves. Was never a martial artist. She's not that pretty anyway.

Halle Berry

One of the worse "famous" actress of this generation. Hate to say it but the only reason she's famous is because she has dark skin.

Pierce Brosnan was the man

He sucked.

Brought too much "Remington Steele" into the role.
