LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) Peter Jackson's two upcoming movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" have been given official names and release dates.

The first of the two films, which are currently being filmed back-to-back in New Zealand, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," arrives in theaters on December 14, 2012.

The sequel, opening December 13, 2013, will be known as "The Hobbit: There and Back Again." Both will be released through Warner Bros.

The two prequels to Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy follow the adventures of Bilbo Baggins -- to be played by Martin Freeman, with Ian Holm reprising his role as the elder Bilbo -- in his quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the dragon Smaug.

The sprawling cast includes a number of other "Rings" veterans: Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey; Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; and Andy Serkis as Gollum.

Never cared for the Rings series. I personally hate elves about as much as I hate the smurfs.

The Rings had stunning imagery, though. The scenes were simply amazing. I'm not talking about the battle scenes or any of the made up stuff. I'm talking about the scenes shot outdoors in New Zealand. Simply amazing.

I'm happy that if they have to squeeze more money out of it it's Peter Jackson still in the director's chair. I was really skeptical about LOTR, but wow they were superb films. It was also great he didn't compromise, and did 3 hours every time to get as much as possible in, really rewarded the fanboys and girls.

Can't see how they're getting two movies out of it though, the Hobbit is a fairly shortish book vis a vis any of the LOTR ones:confused:.

On the plus side, after seeing what Jackson did to LOTR, my expectations may be lowered enough that I'm not disappointed.

On the minus side, that they're letting Jackson anywhere near more Tolkien stuff makes me very angry. Or at least rather miffed.

Heh, my girl is gonna love it when I tell her this, she loves the series, and read the books.

Gotta say I enjoyed the trilogy as well. I like the fantasy genre but back in the days I was mostly just playing Warhammer. High Elves ftw :P
