With this raise, the total budget will come up to 521.6 billion rupees from 442 billion rupees allocated last year.

“The recommendations to raise the defence budget were given keeping in view the requirements due to the ongoing war on terror,” The Express Tribune quoted committee chairperson Azra Fazal Pechuho, as telling reporters outside the Parliament House.

The committee was briefed about the requirements of the army by concerned officials, and sought a significant raise in the defence budget for the current and the next fiscal year.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, Azra said defence requirements of the armed forces were reviewed at length during the meeting and approval had been accorded for an increase by 18 percent in the defence budget for the upcoming fiscal year in the wake of growing inflation.

Azra told journalists that 25 per cent of the defence budget was spent on the purchase of defence equipment and that the needs of the army had increased due to the war against terrorism.

“Therefore, the decision has been taken to enhance the defence budget,” she added.
