What do you think about the LOSAT?

    PROs:
It has a range of 5km and can hit moving or stationary targets. It can defeat any known armour threat

    CONs:
You are limited to 4 shots at a time, and the missiles are exspensive. Long time for reloads.

Personally I think it's a waste. Why not just bring M8's with them instead of a HUMVEE with 4 missiles.

      Limited arc of fire.

      Overly expensive.

      Not remotely manportable.

      Yuck.

We could buy say 150 more C-17 Globemaster III airplanes and we wouldn't have to be wasting all this on "Stryker" and "Future Combat System" or the "LOSAT". In the end it would be billions upon billions of dollars cheaper.

Hell I bet you could throw in 15-20 Fastships for Marine Corps bases in the pacific and it would still be cheaper. They could get to Taiwan or the Phillipines from Okinowa in less then 2 days at full speed(50 knots).

You mean that the boat people and the birdbrains would actually spend money on what the bellycrawlers need?

There are things the army (and marines) can control and there are things that they cannot. Lift is one of them. Thus, this need to deliver maxium force in minimun weight.

                Cmon now.

                This is a great idea.

LOSAT is an inexpensive way to get rid of tanks, plus it can be paradropped.

It might (arguably) look good on paper, but the badguys rarely listen when you say "Timeout, I have to reload".... that is if you last long enough to need a reload before the T-62/72/80s decide to give you a tungsten enima.

Something like the Thunderbolt with IAAP(similar to the Arena active defense system but can knock down HEAT rounds as well) would be the best for early entry. The 120mm main gun gives it the ability to knock out targets in excess of 3000 meters and the IAAP can protect it against RPG's and HEAT rounds. This thing would cost a lot less then an unprotected HUMVEE with missles that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and only get the penetration they are advertising at it's peak velocity just before rocket burn out.

LOSAT is not a great idea.

has this even been combat proven?

Would you think it is a great idea if it was cheaper and for a rapid reaction force?

LOSAT is still in development, so has never been combat proven.

The FOG-M ballistic trajectory guided anti-tank missile is a MUCH MUCH better system, IMO.

How can you determine its strength without seeing it in action?

Looking at it's characteristics on paper gives you a pretty decent idea of what the worth of a system is....or isn't.
