  • And if the Soviet Union had won...?

Just curious and these "what if" threads are fascinating....

What if....the SU had won the cold war?

What if the US is the one that suffered the fate of the Soviets and went broke back in the early 90's?

How would Asia, Europe and all other regions around the world look today?

How would your government cope with the Soviets as the sole superpower?

What would the US look like today?

      Hitesh,

      Just a small correction....
If the USSR had won, there wouldn't have been a Pakistani arse at the first place for you to kick. ;)
Karachi would be a very busy Soviet port.

I can't see a plausible scenario where the USSR wins without extreme use of force. The USSR was built along the lines of an industrial wartime society so they were at disadvantage during peacetime.
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov

i'm sure that until 1989 the real Ussr defence budget was clasified so: how can you tell ?

If the Soviets had won, they may enjoy their unipolar moment for a few years, then the world would again move toward a multipolar arrangement of power... unless the Soviets are willing to use extreme force to maintain its global hegemony, but they probably won't do any better than the Americans in that regard.

soviet defence budget was not indicative because there was no market pricing in soviet economy and almost every civil production line was dual-capable.

Could you please expand on that, the 'Industrial wartime society' part.

All metal-working production lines anywhere were and are dual-capable, you just need to switch out the CNC programming. Or hand the guy on the lathe the right blueprints for what you want. This was prepared in a number of Western countries too for the prospect of rapidly moving to a war footing, there were even rumours that certain earmarked larger industrial plants (in particular the automobile industry) already had the necessary plans in position in peacetime.
Same thing for chemical production. Or anything else including even semiconductors.

The US could not break economically speaking, as it did not.

The plausible scenario would have been USSR turning into a bigger military state and surviving the 90s, and starting a slow economic recovery in the 2000s, using business and trade like PRC.

In that case the population problem that Russia faces would have decreased, there might have been more insurgencies to deal with in USSR, they would have been more involved in Afghanistan in the 90s to early 2000s.

primarily their focus on agricultural, heavy industrial and military goods over consumer goods. despite actually outnumbering the US by approximately 20% the soviet economy was only half the size of the US's.
