An unexpected military cooperative exercise between China and Turkey has caught the eye of Washington-based analysts.

The two air forces were involved in a joint air exercise in the central Anatolian province of Konya, the first such exercise involving the air forces of China (People’s Liberation Army Air Force – PLAAF) and NATO member Turkey.

Part of the significance is that the PLAAF recently demonstrated major advances in long-range strike during their own “Peace Mission 2010.”

The latest joint exercise, “Anatolian Eagle,” in the past has been conducted jointly with the U.S. Air Force, other NATO air forces and the Israeli Air Force.

Ankara’s Zama newspaper reported that Turkish F-16s and Chinese Su-27s staged a mock dogfight. Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao plans a visit to Turkey next month where several agreements on economic and cultural cooperation are expected to be signed. Chinese aircraft, including the JF-17 export fighter, stopped in Turkey to refuel on the way to last summer’s Farnborough air show.

    Turkey flies 200 F-16s, 150 RF/F-4s and 75 F-5s.

Another sign that Turkey is changing its international stance is modification of its security policy to remove some of its neighboring countries from a list of those considered as national security threats and the exclusion of the IAF from its exercises.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has reportedly opened its airspace to Chinese warplanes taking part in joint military maneuvers with Turkey.

Ankara and Beijing conducted the drills in Turkey's Central Anatolia region last month.

The war games, codenamed the Anatolian Eagle, were the first involving Turkey and China. Turkey had previously carried out Anatolian Eagle maneuvers with the US and other NATO members as well as Israel.

Turkish F-16, Chinese Su-27 and Mig-29 fighter jets took part in mock dogfights during the drills.

The maneuvers come ahead of a planned visit by Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao to Turkey.

Turkey and China took their first step in military cooperation in the late 1990s with joint missile production, manufacturing weapons with a 150-kilometer range, the Hurriyet daily reported on its website.

The multinational Anatolian Eagle exercise is hosted by the Turkish Air Forces and is aimed at boosting aerial cooperation and training. The exercises have been performed since June 2001.

Turkey, China Shun the Dollar in Conducting Trade

Turkey, China Shun the Dollar in Conducting Trade - WSJ.com

ISTANBUL (Dow Jones)--Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and China Premier Wen Jiabao said Friday their two countries would from now on trade using their own currencies, effectively excluding the U.S. dollar.

The two leaders also pledged to triple trade between China and Turkey to $50 billion within five years, and to $100 billion by 2020, speaking at a joint news conference in Ankara that marked the final stop of Mr. Wen's European tour.

"We are forming an economic strategic partnership ... In all of our relations, we have agreed to use the lira and yuan," Mr. Erdogan said.

Yeah... it would've been kind of a pain if the PLAAF had to fly around Iran.

Could it be that the PressTV article contains some mistakes? I looked up the Anatolian Eagle webpage and the most recent event would be held between 11-22 October (ANATOLIAN EAGLE).

China, Turkey Kicks off Week-long Military Training

The Chinese People's Liberation Army and Turkey's armed forces kicked off a week-long joint military training in Turkey Monday, according to China's Ministry of National Defense.

The training, attended by ground forces from both countries, includes training of basic assault skills in hilly terrains and tactics, the ministry said in a statement.

The training is aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and trust, deepening communication and cooperation between the two armies, it reads.

I am not happy seeing Turkey's drift away from the West; but, then again, who can blame them. I think the US Gov't made a mistake marginalizing the Turks and taking them for granted. They may not be the most powerful country in the region, but they still occupy a strategic position in the Near East; we alienate them at our peril.

Errr, yes, they are, at least defensively against their most probable biggest opponent, Russia, and offensively against the rest of her neighbours. Israel might have the nuclear edge but that is neutralized by the American nuclear umbrella. Turkey is the 2nd largest military force in NATO.

I would have to question the value of exercising without AIS pods and a decent electronic training ground; especially with the outdated recording equipment on those fighters. Less useful than a meeting over the Aegean in more modern fighters. Purely political move by Erdogan which is not going to score him any brownie points when it comes time to beg for F-35s.

OOE Sir, what do you think about Turkey being against the Israeli's blockading Gaza while yet Turkey occupies Cyprus? Your thoughts?

exactly. he's doing it to show the US he has "other options" past following the US/NATO line.

i'm surprised the turkish military isn't more incensed about this. switching out training with the americans and the israelis to practice with and against second-rate aircraft ain't exactly a good deal.
